Director of Finance and Business Operations

The Director of Finance and Business Operations is the business leader of the department(s) that he/she supports. Working in conjunction with the chair of the department, the Director provides overall administrative management of the business-related functions of the academic, clinical, and mission area enterprise including budget, facilities and space, finance, grant administration (pre- and post-award), human resources, and information technology.

This position is functionally aligned through Finance and operationally assigned to the Unit(s) or Department(s). This role has a matrixed reporting relationship to the Department Chair and the AVP of Finance and Business Operations leader for the Mission area.

Primary Responsibilities: Strategy:
  • Establish a budget based on the short- and long-term needs of the department(s) and institution.
  • Serve as the principal business officer responsible for leading and overseeing all financial management and mission‐based management affairs.
  • Plan, direct, and participate in operational excellence programs related to mission‐based management principles.
  • Direct and supervise administrative staff in areas including requisitions, purchasing, financial reporting, and performance evaluations.
  • Maintain an effective system of internal controls that is compliant with policies and procedures.
  • Ensure alignment of financial and operational practices across MSM.
Unit / Department Finance Leadership:
  • Develop, improve, and maintain financial models to manage the annual operating budget.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process, coordinating across functional teams.
  • Steward and optimize the use of funds and monitor financial health.
  • Manage department P&L, run proformas, and ensure accountability for budget adherence.
  • Build internal systems for contracting and procurement.
  • Establish effective systems of record management in compliance with accounting procedures.
  • Collaborate with leaders of other programs for optimal results in financial management.
  • Facilitate faculty compensation plan data analytics.
Business Operations and Administration:
  • Provide guidance and training to staff and faculty for compliance with internal controls.
  • Represent the chair in administrative meetings.
  • Supervise the Manager of Administration and Finance and other finance staff.
  • Ensure timely and accurate execution of all personnel actions.
  • Maintain accurate pay practices and payroll reconciliation.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • 10+ years of experience in finance and business operations.
  • Experience in financial modeling and managing compliant financial systems.
  • Strong analytical, financial, and organizational skills.
  • Proven record of overseeing financial matters for an organization.
  • Ability to cultivate effective relationships with various professionals.
  • Excellent communication, time management, and organizational abilities.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel and other Microsoft Office programs.
  • Familiarity with Banner or other ERP systems.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Minimum 7+ years of progressive finance and business operations experience.
  • Demonstrated financial acumen and budget management skills.
  • Experience supervising others.
  • Strong interpersonal and communicative skills.
  • Highly detail-oriented with the ability to convey complex information simply.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate discipline in Finance, Accounting, or related business discipline and Master’s degree.
  • Prior work experience in an academic, clinical, and/or mission area institution.
  • 15+ years of experience in finance and financial planning.
  • Experience in implementing the strategic mission of the institution.
  • Understanding of pre- and post-award grant processes.
