Senior Software Engineer

The Software Engineer designs, develops, tests, deploys, documents, maintains, and enhances complex and diverse software systems based upon documented requirements. These systems might include, but are not limited to, processing intensive analytics, novel algorithm development, manipulation of extremely large data sets, real-time systems, business management information systems, and systems which incorporate data repositories, data transport services, and application and systems development and monitoring. Works individually or as part of a team. Reviews and tests software components for adherence to the design requirements and documents test results. Resolves software problem reports. Utilizes software development and software design methodologies appropriate to the development environment. Provides specific input to the software components of system design to include hardware/software trade-offs, software reuse, use of Open Source Software (OSS) and/or Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) Government Off-The-Shelf (GOTS) software in place of new development, and requirements analysis and synthesis from system level to individual software components. Experience developing in Unix. Ability to perform shell scripting. Working knowledge of Configuration Management (CM) tools and Web Services implementation.

The Software Engineer shall be responsible for developing, sustaining, and troubleshooting GHOSTGEM's software suite of applications including JEDIPOWER and possibly future capabilities as mission needs arise. Software development activities include implementation, testing, and integration with other COTS and FOSS products, packages, and libraries. The Software Engineer must have a demonstrated understanding of the software development life cycle.

The Level 3 Software Engineer (SWE) shall possess the following capabilities:

1. Analyze user requirements to derive software design and performance requirements
2. Debug existing software and correct defects
3. Design and code new software or modify existing software to add new features
4. Write or review software and system documentation
5. Integrate existing software into new or modified systems or operating environments
6. Develop simple data queries for existing or proposed databases or data repositories
7. Software development using languages such as C, C++, Python, Ruby, Perl, JavaScript, etc.
8. Has experience with agile development processes
9. Has experience with source code control systems, such as Git
10. Serve as team lead at the level appropriate to the software development process being used on any particular project
11. Design and development of relational and non-relational database applications
12. Use of orchestration frameworks such as Spring and Kafka
13. Familiarization with queue management systems
14. Develop or implement algorithms to meet or exceed system performance and functional standards
15. Develop and execute test procedures for software components
16. Develop software solutions by analyzing system performance standards and conferring with users or system engineers; analyzing systems flow, data usage and work processes; and investigating problem areas
17. Modify existing software to adapt to new hardware or to improve its performance
18. Design, develop, and modify software systems using scientific analysis and mathematical models to predict and measure outcomes and consequences of design decisions
19. Java development using the Eclipse IDE (Integrated Development Environment)
20. Development of Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) applications
21. Experience using collaboration and software development tools (ie. Atlassian)
22. Software development using continuous integration practices
23. Experience with container technologies (ie. Docker)
24. Unix shell scripting
25. Development of event driven or data driven analytics
26. Development of cloud-based solutions and technologies
27. Design or implement complex algorithms requiring adherence to strict timing, system resource, or interface constraints. Perform quality control on team products
28. Recommend and implement suggestions for improving documentation and software development process standards
29. Oversee one or more software development teams and ensure the work is completed in accordance with the constraints of the software development process being used on any particular project
30. Confer with system engineers and hardware engineers to derive software requirements and to obtain information on project limitations and capabilities, performance requirements, and interfaces
31. Coordinate software installation on a system and monitor performance to ensure operational specifications are met
32. Recommend new technologies and processes for complex software projects
33. Serve as the technical lead of multiple software development teams
34. Select the software development process in coordination with the customer and system engineering
35. Ensure quality control of all developed and modified software
36. Delegate programming and testing responsibilities to one or more teams and monitor their performance

Qualifications

Master's degree in Computer Science or related discipline from an accredited college or university, plus five (5) years of experience as a SWE, in programs and contracts of similar scope, type, and complexity

OR

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related discipline from an accredited college or university, plus seven (7) years of experience as a SWE, in programs and contracts of similar scope, type, and complexity

OR

Nine (9) years of experience as a SWE, in programs and contracts of similar scope, type, and complexity

Required Skills

1. Experience using the Linux CLI
2. Experience with scripting using Bash/Python
3. Experience developing with Java in a Linux environment
4. Experience with the Spring Framework including Spring Boot, Spring Data and Spring Integration
5. Experience with Messaging Frameworks such as RabbitMQ and Kafka
6. Experience with NoSQL databases including MongoDB
7. Experience using Apache NiFi canvas to process and distribute data
8. Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker and containerd
9. Experience with CI/CD principles, methodologies, and tools such as GitLab CI and Jenkins
10. Experience with IaC principles, concepts, and tools including Ansible
11. Experience with Source Control Systems such as Git

Desired Skills

1. Experience with container orchestration technologies such as Kubernetes
2. Experience with the Atlassian Tool Suite including Jira and Confluence

Compensation Spotlight:
