Job Summary and Qualifications

The staff technologist works closely with the lead technologist coordination the daily operations and functions of Nuclear Medicine Services. He/She is responsible for all QC/QA on equipment and patient doses. In the absence of the Lead Technologist, he/she will assume the duties of the lead technologist.

MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works with the charge technologist to coordinate the daily patient flow and functions of Nuclear Medicine Services.
  • Assesses performance of quality control procedures and documentation regarding equipment checks as well as calibrations on pharmaceutical tagging
  • Assures proper receipt, handling and disposal of radioactive materials according to regulations and policies.
  • Proficient in performing all exams and can assume the duties of the charge technologist in his/her absence.
  • Orders supplies as necessary.
  • Knowledgeable about departmental and RRMC policies and procedures.
  • Assists or performs any duties that the charge technologist delegates.
  • Prepares stock solutions of radiopharmaceuticals and materials; calculates and administers doses under the direct supervision of a Radiologist.
  • Calibrates equipment.
  • Assesses patient’s understanding of exam and informed consent.
  • Performs diagnostic exams on patients as prescribed by physician.
  • Uses scanners or scintillation cameras for detection of radiation emitted to produce image of organ.
  • Measures radioactivity using Geiger counters, scalers and scintillation detectors.
  • Follows radiation safety techniques and policies in the use and disposal of radioactive materials.
  • Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including neonate, pediatric, adolescent, geriatric and general population.
  • Assesses, evaluates and informs physician of changes in patient’s condition during testing.
  • Instructs and prepares patient for exam.
  • Responsible for the care and safety of patients undergoing exams.
  • Understands contraindications and potential hazards of different labs.
  • Practices medical and surgical aseptic procedures.
  • Takes calls according to monthly schedules, after regular department hours.
  • Compiles and maintains quality assurance information.
  • Interacts professionally with patient/family.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety and related criteria appropriate to the following age groups: neonate, pediatric, adolescent, geriatric and general population.
  • Modifies job duties and communicates with customers in an age appropriate manner.
  • Assesses the patient’s pain and involves the patient in effective management of the pain using age appropriate interventions.

What qualifications you will need:
  • Associate Degree
  • Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist (NMTCB), or Registered Radiographer (ARRT)
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support, or CPR for Healthcare Providers must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
