Job Title: Surgical Technologist I (3311916)

Summary:

Full Time, 24 hours per week, with benefits including 50% off the MBTA pass. Shifts are from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.

New hires are eligible for a one-time, taxable bonus of $10,000, paid in two installments: $5,000 after 90 days of hire and $5,000 after 12 months of hire.

Under the general direction of the Nurse Director and guidance of the Circulating Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technologist is a member of the surgical team responsible for providing intraoperative care to surgical patients. Responsibilities include instrumental care and ensuring patient safety, as well as effective communication among surgical team members.

Responsibilities:
  1. Provide patient care in accordance with Nursing Department and Surgical Services Policies and Procedures.
  2. Demonstrate a commitment to quality by prioritizing daily tasks and focusing on patient progression goals.
  3. Assist and collaborate with the circulating nurse to set up for surgical procedures with proper instrumentation and supplies.
  4. Review procedure and surgeon preference cards to prepare for each surgical procedure.
  5. Communicate frequently with the circulating nurse for direction in preparing the patient for surgery.
  6. Anticipate the needs of the surgical team to provide proper equipment and supplies.
  7. Report patient condition to the circulating nurse.
  8. Participate in planning for special patient needs.
  9. Notify the Nurse Director of any committee meetings or educational programs that may affect patient care.
  10. Maintain accurate documentation in the patient record.
  11. Implement plans of care and ensure accuracy of sponge, sharps, and instrument counts.
  12. Prepare surgical specimens and collect data per policy.
  13. Maintain aseptic technique according to operating room policies.
  14. Assist in the care, cleaning, and maintenance of instruments and equipment.
  15. Participate in staff conferences and educational in-services.
  16. Identify personal learning needs and utilize resources to meet these needs.
  17. Assume responsibility for meeting established policies and standards.
  18. Seek assistance when confronted with unusual situations.
  19. Maintain confidentiality of all patient information.
  20. Participate in quality assurance monitoring related to surgical technologists' expertise.
  21. Report equipment malfunctions promptly.

Physical Requirements:

Lift moderate weights, push stretchers, stand for long periods, and support dependent weight of patients.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent and completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist Program.
  • Current Surgical Technologist Certification required within one year of graduation or equivalent experience.
