HAMLINE UNIVERSITY CHAPLAIN AND DIRECTOR OF THE WESLEY CENTER
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Administration of the Wesley Center:
- · Exercise independent judgement directing the Wesley Center consistent with the University’s mission, vision, and values in alignment with the University’s strategic plan.
- · Hire, motivate, supervise, and retain a team of 2 fulltime staff, one part-time staff, and one VISTA volunteer.
- · Oversee restricted/unrestricted budgets related to the Wesley Center, and p-card and t-card approvals.
- · Oversee communications regarding the Wesley Center, web page updates, social media, learning-outcomes, and year-end reports.
- · Oversee Wesley Center student worker training.
- · Oversee pre-orientation “Do All the Good” Pathway in collaboration with other Pathways leaders.
- · Represent Hamline at various conferences, professional meetings, public programs, and other special events.
- · Oversee annual nominations for MN Campus Compact President’s Civic Engagement Awards; Awards and Scholarships that the Wesley Center supports; and serve on selection team for the Bluhm Award.
Interfaith Leadership on Campus and in Community:
- · Provide invocations and benedictions for public events such as Commencement and Convocation.
- · Organize and lead annual Alumni Memorial Service for Homecoming Weekend.
- · Collaborate with local organizations such as: St. Paul Interfaith Action, and MN Interfaith Power and Light.
- · Represent Hamline to national organizations—Interfaith Youth Core, Better Together, and the President’s Interfaith Campus to Community Challenge.
- · Collaborate with other Hamline staff for crisis response and communications.
Religious and Spiritual Life Programs:
- · Serve as a confidential resource for students, respond to loss and grief, and refer students to colleagues for other forms of support.
- · Actively encourage and participate in efforts to build holistic wellness across the campus in support of the “Whole” student.
- · Collaborate with Associate Chaplain of Jewish Life and Assistant Director of Social Justice Programs for student leader recruitment of student organizations, plan Holy Days commemorations, nominate awardees, and organize the Multi-faith Baccalaureate Service.
- · Oversee student-led groups, Holy Days Calendar, and use of The Gathering Place and The Wellspring as sacred spaces.
- · Organize, recruit, and lead students in the Spirituality Scholars program.
- · Supervise the student leader of Love Boldly initiatives.
- · Collaborate with President’s office for Holiday Tree Festival and other special events.
- · Collaborate with Peer Wellness for end of semester Stressfest events.
- · Lead labyrinth walks, gratitude journaling workshops, prayer circles, and other spiritual formation practices.
Enhance the intellectual life of the campus:
- · Teach up to 3 courses in the area of expertise under the direction of the dean of the college of liberal arts.
The Mahle Endowment in Progressive Christian Thought:
- · Design, organize and lead the events and residency of the annual Mahle Lecturer in Progressive Christian Thought.
- · Collaborate with Events, Marketing, Communications, Library and other campus offices to organize logistics for the events of the Mahle Lecture.
- · Communicate with public organizations and ecclesiastical institutions to communicate about the lecture events.
- · Offer opportunities such as reading groups and book resources for students, staff, and faculty to learn more about the Mahle Lecturer.
- · Write annual reports for Institutional Advancement about Mahle Lecture events.
- · Represent the values, vision, and life of Hamline University to the MN Annual Conference of the UMC, and represent the values, vision and life of the MN Annual Conference to Hamline University.
- · Participate in UMC Board of Higher Education reviews of Hamline University, about every 10 years.
- · Write annual Hamline submission to the MN Annual Conference in conjunction with the President’s Office.
- · Represent Hamline in UMC leadership planning teams such as the North Central Jurisdiction Campus Ministers, UM Creation Justice Movement, Minnesota Hopeful Earthkeepers, and MN Higher Education Action Team (HEAT).
- · Collaborate with UMC national leadership with hosting events and meetings at Hamline, during the 2022 General Conference in Minneapolis.
- · Collaborate with Hamline Church United Methodist for events and programs such as Advent and Holy Week services, Homecoming Pizza Palooza, SPROUT Garden internships, student ministry internships, Homecoming Sunday, and Mahle Lecture events.
- · Represent Hamline when the A Capella Choir sings in Sunday church worship services (several times a year).
- · Maintain ordination responsibilities with MN Annual Conference of UMC—trainings, reports, and spiritual renewal.
- · Communicate and promote opportunities such as the ELI Summer Internship program and UMC Higher Education scholarships.
Pastoral Care:
- · Provide caring support for vocational discernment, healing harm, spiritual formation, and grief process.
- · As appropriate and invited: respond to crisis, visit in hospitals, and lead memorial services.
- · Refer students to other campus resources and resources in the community.
- · Offer pre-marital support and officiate weddings as invited.
Strengthen the Campus Community:
- · Collaborate with the Diversity Initiatives Steering Committee and Office of Inclusive Excellence in developing and supporting campus initiatives.
- · Serve on the Commencement Task Force, Sexual Violence Prevention Task Force, and Sustainability Task Force.
- · Serve on the Food Access Steering Committee in support of developing new initiatives in supporting students’ basic needs.
Passion for Service and Social Justice:
- · Serve as a Catalyst colleague with the Catalyst Spring Break trips as a support and mentor to students.
- · Support Assistant Director of Social Justice Initiatives and Catalyst Executive Board in the development of new Catalyst trips, with both funding and sites.
Development and Grants:
- · Collaborate with Institutional Support with new/sustaining donors.
- · Collaborate with campus administration and leaders for applications to grants and other forms of funding.
- · Serve on the team of Student Affairs’ Directors and participate in meetings, retreats, and programs of the All-Staff, Professional Development, and Diversity subgroups.
- · Participate in office and departmental Learning Outcomes Assessment.
- · Meet monthly with Dean of Students for one on one supervision.
Additional Responsibilities:
- · Ensure office compliance with applicable laws, including, but not limited to, Title IX and FERPA.
- · Exercises best practices with regards to the maintenance of confidential student information.
- · All other duties as requested.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND KEY COMPETENCIES

- · Regular use of Microsoft Office Suite, Google, Google Apps and other social media.
- · Ensure compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- · Masters of Divinity (or equivalent) and ordination with United Methodist affiliation.
- · Three (3) years professional experience in leadership or supervisory role.
- · Three to five (3-5) years of experience in full-time ministry.
- · Clinical Pastoral Education (basic unit).
- · Openness to and ability to support many forms of spiritual practice and spiritual formation.
- · Commitment to lead programs after hours or on weekends.
- · Ability to provide meaningful ecumenical and interfaith services and rituals on campus.
- · Experience in, commitment to, and ability to support the integration of spirituality, social justice action, civic engagement, and academic inquiry.
- · Demonstrated support for diversity as integral to community, spiritual, and academic endeavors.
- · Experience in developing activities and programs that will support the full extent of the Center’s mission.
- · Excellent written and oral communications skills.
- · Experience leading and supervising a diverse staff team.
- · Ability to coordinate endeavors with diverse campus and community constituents.
- · Ability to work evenings and weekends.
PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- · 3-5 years’ experience full-time university chaplaincy/collegiate ministry.
- · Two (2) years of experience with conflict management.
- · Ph.D. in related field with demonstrated competence in academic teaching.
- · Skills and competency as a confidential support, spiritual guide, and facilitator of small groups.
- · Active support and knowledge of multiple religious and spiritual traditions.
- · Ability to make connections with local religious places of worship to enhance the diversity of spiritual life of the Hamline community.
- · Demonstrated successful outcomes of budget management and grant-writing, fund raising initiates and relations with donors.
REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION
- · Ordained Methodist Minister.
WORKING CONDITIONS / EQUIPMENT
Must perform the following essential functions with or without a reasonable accommodation:
