Industry Background: Energy storage systems is a rapidly emerging field. Over the last few years, supply-chain constraints and significant safety incidents arising from lithium-ion batteries globally have resulted in a dramatic increase in costs and reduced confidence in the reliability of the technology. Alsym is working on an exciting proprietary aqueous battery technology that is expected to compete with state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries while offering the technology at a fraction of the cost and with inherent non-flammability.

Key Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related discipline.
  • 2+ years industry experience
  • Recently graduated PhD candidates, post-doctoral candidates, and researchers with experience in national labs will be considered if they have an exceptional background.
  • Experience with air free synthesis manipulations such as glove box and Schlenk line operations.
  • Specialization in inorganic materials synthesis of metal oxides with experience in hydrothermal, sol-gel, and solid-state syntheses, among related methodologies.
  • Strong candidates will have experience with the targeted synthesis of nano/mesostructured materials and use of dopants or secondary components to tune material properties such as strain, defect, and vacancy engineering would be ideal.
  • Working knowledge of physical and elemental composition characterization methods of metal and metal oxide materials is required (SEM/TEM, EDS, XRF, XRD, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with particle engineering and material coatings is preferred.
  • Experience with electrochemical methods for materials characterization (CV, CA, LSV, EIS, etc.) and electrochemical cell building would be advantageous.
  • Experience with aqueous electrochemical systems (heterogeneous water-splitting and artificial leaf systems, water purification, aqueous energy storage devices, etc.) is a plus.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Develop synthetic methodologies for generation of metal oxide/metallic substrates as electrode powder components.
  • Evaluate the literature for design concepts and new synthesis methodologies and facilitate their introduction to the wider R&D teams.
  • Identify structure-function relationships for materials of interest and identify synthetic methodologies to target desirable properties.
  • Work with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers on material selection, processing, and validation as active electrode materials.
  • Ensure thorough documentation and reporting of experimental results and methodologies to facilitate knowledge transfer within the team.
  • Mentor junior team members and support their development in inorganic synthesis techniques.
  • Maintain compliance with safety regulations and good laboratory practices to ensure a safe and efficient lab environment.
