Operating Room Assistant - 40 hour Rotating Days - BWH Operating Room

The Operating Room Assistant works under the direct supervision of the Supervisor of PCA. The ORA is responsible for transporting patients, cleaning O.R.s, maintaining a clean environment, moving equipment, delivery of specimens, second scrubbing PRN, and other duties as assigned. The ORA functions as a member of the Perioperative Nursing Team who has specific knowledge, skills and training to work in an Operating Room Environment.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Promotes a philosophy of patient/family focused care through cordial greeting and interactions with patients, families, and hospital personnel.
  • Provides hospital/unit orientation information for guests, patients, and families.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of hospital systems and procedures, location of all departments, procedure areas, and other patient services. Refers patients, families, and others to appropriate resources.
  • Independently transports and assists in the transfer of patients of all age groups, adolescence through geriatric.
  • Properly identifies patients utilizing 2 approved identifiers.
  • Ensures safety and support measures in patient transfer (i.e. bedrails raised, patient covered with blanket and warm).
  • Is aware of special precautions in transferring patients with precautions.
  • Is aware of proper body mechanics when assisting in patient transfer and lifting heavy objects.
  • Cleans operating rooms, induction rooms, set-up areas, autoclave areas, and scrub sink areas.
  • Removes suction containers and equipment, laundry bags, trash bags.
  • Washes furniture and makes up O.R. beds.
  • Removes blood from surfaces (i.e. walls, equipment, etc.).
  • Cleans floors.
  • Exchanges full biohazardous needle/medication waste/chemotherapy/sealed sources of radiation and radioisotopes.
  • Anticipates and is attentive to progress of O.R. schedule, having supplies ready for immediate use in order to meet tight deadlines of following cases.
  • Keeps the corridors clean and free of trash and debris.
  • Assists in retrieval, moving, set-up, and return of specialized equipment and instrumentation (i.e., fracture table preparation, ICU beds, foot pedals, intact electrical cords; anesthesia carts, etc.).
  • Delivers specimens to labs (i.e. microbiology, cytology, pathology, etc.).
  • Collects and logs specimens from refrigerators.
  • Retrieves, delivers, and returns blood products.
  • Utilizes patient identifiers when retrieving blood products.
  • Ensures proper hand off of products to OR staff.
  • Creates stock lists, obtains and stocks O.R. scrub sink, sets up rooms, work stations, and autoclave areas (i.e. face masks, soap, paperwork, etc.).
  • Carries out duties that are “service specific” (i.e. PACU, Amigo, Interventional Radiology, etc.).
  • Fills out equipment repair sheets and takes broken stretchers out of circulation.
  • Carries out standard duties which are within scope (i.e. holds limbs, assists in positioning patients).
  • The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients (all age groups) served in the Perioperative area and Operating Rooms.
  • Performs pre-operative surgical preps (i.e. wash site and hair clipping).

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Able to read, understand, and write English.
  • Successful completion of Hospital Orientation.
  • Successful completion of Departmental Orientation and Training.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Must be able to lift 40lbs. independently.
  • Must be able to push stretcher independently with patients weighing up to 250lbs.
  • Must be able to comprehend written directions for mixing cleaning supplies and ordering supplies.
  • Must be aware of proper body mechanics when assisting in patient transfer and lifting heavy objects.
  • Must possess interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with other health care members.
  • Must constantly be alert and attentive to progress of O.R. schedule to meet tight deadlines of following cases.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in a sterile and substerile environment requiring wearing surgical scrub attire which includes, but is not limited to scrubs, hat, mask, gloves, booties, gown, and goggles. There may be times when the temperature is required to be very warm (
