Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Under general supervision, provides skilled technical work in support of clinical faculty providing patient care.
  • Administers and documents specialized imaging and clinical tests for clinical care, clinical research, and student education.
  • Monitors and maintains special testing equipment making minor repairs and coordinating on-site maintenance.
  • Maintains e-prescribe for clinic.
General Responsibilities
  • Uses advanced testing skills on clinic patients and human subjects in administering and documenting specialized tests used in clinical diagnostics and research.
  • Assists with conduct of moderately complex clinical research of anatomical and psychophysical data in support of scientific research studying patients with vitreomacular adhesion and associated maculopathies in association with clinical research projects.
  • Monitors and maintains specialized testing equipment and equipment use logs; performs complex and simple repairs and routine maintenance.
  • Assists students performing diagnostic tests using highly specialized equipment for data collection and ensures compliance by collecting and maintaining federally required documentation.
  • Consults with faculty and other personnel on appropriate procedures for projects and proposals.
  • Fields, directs, and answers inquiries relating to contact lenses, exams, and plan of care.
  • Enters patient drug prescriptions, communicates with patients and pharmacies, and maintains e-prescribe for clinic.
  • Cleans, sterilizes, disposes, and maintains surgical instruments, repairs equipment as needed, and coordinates maintenance or repair of equipment that cannot be repaired on site.
  • Orders, receives, and verifies contact lens orders and specialty contact lens orders for patients and clinical use.
  • Monitors faculty, student, and patient schedules and tracks attendance.
  • Trains and supervises optometry students in patient care and administrative policies, advanced special testing techniques, and proper techniques of cleaning and polishing RGP lenses and proper lens care.

Qualifications

EDUCATION / WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED); OR
  • GED and 2 years of optometry or related experience; OR
  • Associate's degree in optical/medical field.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Preferred
  • CPOA or CPOT, JCAHPO, and/or NCLE upon date of hire.
SKILLS

Required
  • Possesses strong technical aptitude.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills.
  • Strong verbal communication and listening skills.
  • Performs work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to simultaneously handle multiple priorities.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires sedentary work as well as extended durations of moving about the workplace. It requires the ability to move objects and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, and the ability to discern between various objects and devices and to position patients. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
