The DC Strategic Optimization Industrial Engineer is responsible for all aspects of Industrial Engineering and process improvements at either all Ambient or Perishable Distribution Center facilities (ADC/PDC). Key Relationships include all vendors, internal business partners and ADC/PDC team members.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Design facilities, processes, and plans utilization of facilities, equipment, materials and personnel to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations. Design workspace layout using drafting tools, software and computer.
  • Establishes work measurement programs and analyzes work samples to develop standards for labor utilization.
  • Implement engineered labor standards at designated Ambient Distribution Centers.
  • Plans and oversees layout of distribution centers, cross-docks, and satellite facilities.
  • Conducts observations, time and motion studies and provides recommendations to maximize workflow and spatial utilization.
  • Analyze data and research activities as needed to recommend business process. Creates detailed implementation plans for new processes, best practices and ensures facility efficiency and workplace safety.
  • Analyze statistical data for inbound and outbound order volumes while optimizing process efficiency.
  • Identify and champion improvement opportunities in safety, productivity, cost savings and quality.
  • Manage various process improvement projects. Observe, recommend, and implement best practices in all Ambient or Perishable Distribution Centers.
  • Work with 3PL Consulting resources to implement engineered labor standards program for designated Ambient or Perishable Distribution Centers.
  • Review and evaluate new material handling equipment; provide detailed cost benefit analysis or ROI calculation for the procurement of the same.
  • Identify and document improvements to current Warehouse Management System.
  • Create staffing models for new and existing facilities.
  • Read and Draft complex building drawings for new and existing facilities.
  • Work with purchasing systems, establish cycle counting procedures, and lead continuous improvement projects throughout the organization.
  • Work with Ambient or Perishable Distribution Center leadership in driving continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Implement and support new Supply Chain and lean warehousing initiatives.
  • Partner with Robotics and Automation team on projects related to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Responsible for structuring and leading cross functional projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering with 5-7 years of experience or a Master’s degree with 3-4 years of experience.
  • Specialization or prior experience with focus in Supply Chain/Logistics in a Distribution Center environment.
  • APICS certification is a plus.
  • Experience in using AutoCAD R2000, 2002, or any higher version required.
  • Experience in using Enterprise Resource Planning, Warehouse Management System, and Transportation Management System and other software required.
  • Previous experience of Manhattan Warehouse Management System a strong plus (ADC).
  • Previous experience of Blue Yonder Warehouse Management System a strong plus (PDC).
  • Working knowledge in using statistical packages like Arena simulation, SPSS or SAS, slotting packages preferred.
  • Knowledge of Inventory Control, demand forecasting techniques, operations.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Strong database and MS-Office application skills.
  • Ability to communicate well at all levels of the organization.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills.
  • Ability to use statistical tools like simulation and other mathematical models on an as needed basis for decision making.
  • Ability to work alone as well as part of a team on various projects.
  • Ability to prioritize requests from multiple sources.
  • Ability to maintain and ensure confidentiality of team member and company information.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to accommodate flexible schedules to meet the needs of the ADC or PDC network.
  • Ability to utilize equipment for the job (such as computers, cell phone, copiers, scanners, printers, etc).
  • Ability to Travel regularly.

Physical Demands/Equipment:

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally when in the warehouse conducting work.
  • Must be able to sit on an almost continual basis and stand, walk, bend, or squat on an occasional basis in a normal office environment.
  • Frequent to continual usage of keyboard and monitor.
  • Ability to use drafting tools and/or computer software programs for facility/workspace design.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time to analyze or complete studies on warehouse operations. 
  • Must be able to walk for several hours at a time in the warehouse analyzing activities or conducting observations or studies.

In accordance with the Pay Transparency requirements, the following represents a good faith estimate of the compensation range for this position. At BJ’s Wholesale Club, we carefully consider a wide range of non-discriminatory factors when determining salary. Actual salaries will vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, education, experience, and qualifications. The pay range for this position is starting from $74,500.00.
