Summary:

Performs under minimal supervision routine and specialized testing on patient specimens to obtain information used in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.

Responsibilities:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Performs testing on all specimens and ensures that results are accurate and complete.
  2. Works in a team environment to accomplish Laboratory goals.
  3. Possesses knowledge of Medical Technology and answers inquiries from physicians and other health care professionals.
  4. May be required to mentor new employees and students.
  5. Obtains and processes specimens for laboratory testing according to department/section policy and procedures.
  6. Verifies accuracy of test specimen before testing.
  7. Performs technical procedures as required by department or supervisor.
  8. Performs all testing in a timely manner as established by departmental policy and performs all tests with confidence.
  9. Inspects instruments and verifies that equipment is in proper working order before testing.
  10. Ensures that test results correlate with each other and the patient's clinical situation.
  11. Rechecks and reports to the supervisor all questionable results.
  12. Follows critical value procedure.
  13. Demonstrates proficiency in performing all computer tasks associated with job responsibilities.
  14. Performs scheduled maintenance to assure proper operation of equipment.
  15. Records the procedures performed.
  16. Performs quality control and quality assurance procedures and instrument checks correctly.
  17. Performs analytical and decision-making functions with minimal supervision.
  18. Has working knowledge of the theory of laboratory procedures.
  19. Prepares and presents continuing education for department personnel.
  20. Applies step-by-step problem solving and thinking patterns.
  21. Acts as charge person assigned to provide direction, support, and technical ability to others.

  2. Attends and participates in staff meetings and in-services and/or reviews documentation as required.
  3. Assists in the orientation of others and actively participates in mentoring.
  4. Performs analytical and decision-making functions with minimal supervision.
  5. Recognizes and seeks assistance/consultation when appropriate.
  6. Demonstrates an understanding of relative Hospital and all-departmental policies and procedures including safety issues.
  7. Possesses awareness of programs/services provided by Hospital and where they are located.
  1. Is cooperative in interactions treating customers with courtesy, respect, and compassion.
  2. Is patient when responding to questions and answers questions appropriately.
  3. Responds to requests in a timely manner.
  4. Handles interruptions in a skillful way.
  5. Maintains a professional appearance and demeanor.

EDUCATION:

  1. MT with Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  2. MT ASCP/NCA with bachelor's degree and 2-5 years' experience.
