Responsibilities:

The Data Architect will support Barrow Wise's CPS project and perform the following duties:

  1. Enable the management and sharing of infectious disease data between Chicago Public Schools and the Health Department.
  2. Improve data quality (business processes, governance, systems/applications, etc.).
  3. Enhance the efficiency of public health response to disease outbreaks for Chicago Public School students.
  4. Define and implement the long-term technology strategy and innovations roadmaps across analytics, data engineering, and data platforms.
  5. Create standards, design patterns, and best practices for ETL development in an enterprise data warehouse environment.
  6. Oversee the expansion of existing data architecture and data query performance optimization.
  7. Assist with identifying future state architecture (data fabric, active metadata, Data Lake, Data Lakehouse).
  8. Perform current state data model assessments/target data models and gap analysis.
  9. Propose new database architecture and support data migration from an existing legacy system to a new structure.
  10. Create source-to-target mapping documents to transform the source data into the target warehouse and test final transformations.
  11. Maintain and create extensions to ODS.
  12. Assist in designing the data warehouse and ensure that data is stored and maintained in consistent formats.
  13. Counsel Analysts and Subject Matter Experts on specific topics to accurately capture existing business rules/principles.
  14. Establish data modeling naming standards, abbreviations, guidelines, and best practices.
  15. Develop and maintain conceptual, physical, and logical data models.
  16. Drive best practice solutions for data in a collaborative environment.
  17. Provide insight and strategies for data architecture solutions.
  18. Coordinate with a Solutions Architect to find the best data solution and workflows to support projects.
  19. Lead architectural design and strategy discussions.
  20. Utilize various ETL tools, including MS SSIS and Ab Initio.
  21. Perform ETL transformations between data stored in MS SQL Server Management Studio, Azure SQL Database, Oracle databases, and ServiceNow.
  22. Utilize scripting languages, Bash, PowerShell, Google Script, C#, and Python.
  23. Perform AppWorx workload automation.
  24. Perform data profiling and data modeling of both dimensional and non-dimensional data in 3NF.
  25. Work remotely.

An ideal candidate has the following:

  1. U.S. Citizenship.
  2. A Master's degree from an accredited college or university in computer science, data science, engineering, or related field, required.
  3. 8 years of technology delivery experience with at least 7 years focus on database system architecture and design, including the following:
    1. Experience producing high-quality solution architecture and design documents.
    2. Experience leading projects involving data warehousing, data modeling, and data analysis.
    3. Hands-on experience in performance tuning techniques.
    4. Experience with API and web service implementation (REST, API, SOAP API).
    5. Experience with Cloud data warehouse technologies (Azure Data Warehouse, Amazon Redshift, Snowflake).
    6. Experience with business intelligence tools and technologies such as ETL, Power BI, and Tableau.
  4. Ability to socialize and communicate the technical architecture and design to business and developers.
  5. Expertise in BI and data warehousing principles, including data modeling, data quality.
  6. Extract/transform/load processes as they apply to data preparation for BI/Analytic solutions.
  7. Expert level knowledge of T-SQL, Stored Procedures, Data Modeling, Views, and Functions.
  8. Ability to resolve performance issues.
  9. Ability to collaborate and excel in complex, cross-functional teams involving data scientists, business analysts, and stakeholders.
  10. Familiarity with the latest trends in data engineering and data management (APIs, data virtualization, stream data integration, augmented data integration).
  11. Familiarity with SQL Server database administration.
  12. Familiarity with modern ETL integration solutions (SSIS, Ab Initio, Datastage, Informatica, Azure Data Factory).
  13. Familiarity with K-12 Education is preferred.
