Nemours is seeking a Medical Technologist (Microbiology), Full-Time, to join our Nemours Children's Health team in Wilmington, Delaware.

Medical Technologist for Clinical Laboratory; must have BSMT or equivalent, and be able to provide high-quality results with attention to detail and offer excellent customer service to families and colleagues. Demonstrates professional, friendly, courteous, interpersonal skill in interactions with hospital staff, supervisory staff, co-workers, customers, and patients/family members.

The provision of laboratory services by the performance of clinical laboratory procedures and related tasks includes:

  • Performance of analytical procedures, using manual and automated methods, and through a variety of clinical laboratory methodologies (e.g., manual/visual plate-reading, microscopy, analyzer, rapid-test, etc.). Supervision is not required for specimen processing, test performance, reporting results of procedures with documented training. Must be able to perform all required calibration, quality control, statistical calculations, and other process control and mathematical functions.
  • Makes presentations (e.g., gives educational talks) to groups as assigned.
  • Participates as a member on inspection teams, for example, as part of the College of American Pathologists program. Orders, accessions, statuses, and reports results of tests performed on patient specimens, monitoring a variety of critical clinical issues, such as patient identifiers, specimen quality, order appropriateness, etc.
  • Uses, calibrates, and performs troubleshooting and maintenance on laboratory equipment following established procedures, and as assigned by supervisor.
  • If assigned, collects specimens from patients and others as assigned, including collection of blood specimens by phlebotomy, following established procedures for this.
  • Transports specimens as assigned, for example, from Operating Room, following appropriate procedures.
  • Reviews technical and administrative procedures as assigned.
  • Handles supply and inventory issues as required/assigned.
  • Answers telephone as assigned; interacts routinely with a variety of individuals, including physicians, and other clinical staff, patients and their families, inspectors, vendors, etc.
  • Follows all laboratory and hospital safety policies (including, but not limited to chemical safety, e.g., the laboratory's Chemical Hygiene Plan, infection control policies, etc.).
  • Trains others as assigned (e.g., students, residents, new employees, etc.).

Job Requirements

  • B. S. in Medical Technology (B.S.M.T. or equivalent, e.g., HHS examination or ability to meet CLIA qualifications for Moderate complexity laboratory testing) required.
  • Clinical Laboratory technical skills, such as pipetting, aliquotting, microscopy, etc.
  • Experience with Microbiology Plate reading and Mycology preferred.
