The San Diego office of SmithGroup is looking for a Senior Lab Planner to join our team.


Working with us, you will:

  1. Meet with clients/users to develop or validate program requirements for lab and high-tech facilities.
  2. Develop space programs and physical plans at a variety of scales.
  3. Collaborate with the project team in planning facilities by developing planning grids, lab organization and service distribution concepts.
  4. Lead the documentation of laboratory systems such as casework, lab equipment, and development of laboratory spaces to create next generation settings for discovery.
  5. Manage one or more projects including negotiating project scope and fees, job production and quality, and fee management.
  6. Participate in marketing efforts through proposal development, interview participation and presentations.
  7. Develop trusting relationships with clients.
  8. Mentor junior staff and participate in performance coaching.
  9. Participate in the recruitment and interviewing process as requested.

An ideal candidate has:

  1. A bachelor's degree in Architecture or equivalent.
  2. Minimum 10 years of experience in programming, planning of laboratory and high-technology facilities.
  3. LEED AP and Architectural Registration preferred.
  4. Experience with academic, research and preferably STEM facilities for college & university clients.
  5. Project experience in a range of project types, complexity and scale.
  6. The ability to manage clients, project teams and project processes with ease.
  7. Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite and data-based systems; working knowledge of Revit (highly desired), along with SketchUp, Rhino and Grasshopper.
  8. The ability to travel locally, nationally & internationally up to 20%.

SmithGroup's competitive compensation and benefit package is designed to meet the needs of a diverse staff. The anticipated salary range for this position is $148,000 to $189,000 annually, at the time of posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the anticipated salary range for this position. Additionally, an employee in this position is eligible for a performance-based bonus on an annual basis. Our comprehensive benefits include medical, dental and vision coverage, flexible spending account options and voluntary insurances. We provide an opportunity to invest in your future through our 401(k) program with employer matching and a continuing education reimbursement. We offer 3 weeks of paid time off within the first year of employment, with the option of purchasing additional time off, 8 paid federal holidays, and parental leave benefits. SmithGroup also promotes a healthy work/life balance for our staff which includes an alternative work schedule that provides employees with an additional 15 days off per year (usually Fridays), as well as hybrid work options that give our team the flexibility to work within our vibrant office culture or remotely, as needed.
