Job Description - Patient Financial Counselor, Hybrid (3309387)
The Patient Financial Counselor reports directly to the Manager of Patient Financial Services. The Patient Financial Counselor is responsible for the in-depth evaluation of financial history for both uninsured and underinsured patients to determine eligibility for government assistance programs. The Patient Financial Counselor will serve as the primary practice contact when patients require assistance with various billing/financial related issues that cannot be resolved by Patient Billing Solutions. You will ensure patients are appropriately financially covered for their medical needs and are an essential component of the healthcare revenue cycle, working with patients, clinicians, insurance companies, and healthcare administration to ensure patients are financially cleared for medical and surgical services. The Patient Financial Counselor will work collaboratively with various departments and agencies.
Schedule: Hybrid
The individual can expect to work onsite at the main campus on 75 Francis Street in Boston, MA for a probationary period before moving to a hybrid work schedule (3 days in office/2 days remote). The hours are 8:00am - 4:30pm and 8:30am - 5:00pm.

What does a day look like in this role?
- Performs financial assessment for uninsured and underinsured individuals.
- Helps patients apply for and understand financial assistance programs.
- Registers patients by obtaining, verifying, and recording personal, demographic, and financial information.
- Verifies patient insurance coverage with third-party payers.
- Assures proper financial classification and updates the system accordingly.
- Contacts insurance companies to verify coverage and benefits.
- Responsible for screening patients for various health programs and assisting in the application process.
- Maintains communication with government agencies regarding claims.
- Keeps track of cases using EPIC and Financial Assistance Module (FAM).
- Achieves and maintains ongoing department training and certification as Certified Application Counselor (CAC).
- Acts as a resource to hospital personnel on financial matters.
- Assists patients with deciphering notices from EOHHS.
- Submits Social Security Protective Filing Form for NICU patients.
- Acts as a liaison between patients and hospital billing departments.
- Creates and provides estimates to patients and practices.
- Works to resolve collection disputes and collects payments.
- Utilizes knowledge of payer requirements and researches billing inquiries.
- Maintains a daily patient quota using EPIC and FAM.
- Works on special projects as needed.
- Maintains compliance with HIPAA and department regulations.
- Maintains effective working relationships with coworkers and other departments.
- Adheres to Customer Service Standards.
What we need from you:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferred; high school diploma required.
- 3-5 years of experience in a hospital/health center setting.
- Must be willing to become a Certified Application Counselor (CAC).
- Knowledge of government/state health insurance preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in credit, collection, and billing.
- Ability to interpret billing manuals and insurance coverage.
- Basic keyboard skills and good communication skills.
- Excellent organization and prioritization skills.
- Detail-oriented with problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of medical terminology helpful.
- Experience with Microsoft Office and Share Point preferred.
- Bilingual preferred.
