Job Summary and Qualifications

The infection preventionist is responsible for coordinating the hospitals infection surveillance, prevention and control program. This must be done in a manner consistent with current recommendations from Indiana State Department of Health, the Centers for Disease Control, Joint Commission and CMS as well as OSHA.

What will you do in this role:

  • Maintain log of infections and other infection control records and files in a manner consistent with those mandated by regulatory bodies
  • Maintain knowledge of current governmental requirements for reporting certain infections and diseases as mandated
  • Monitor hospital laboratory reports
  • Follow-up on CCI indicators and isolation precautions
  • Track surgical site infection rates through review of hospital data and monthly surveys sent out to physicians
  • Provide information to physician’s and their offices
  • Provide education to staff as needed on current infection control practices
  • Investigate patient data and review with physician consultant
  • Compile infection statistics and prepare reports
  • Perform communicable disease tracking
  • Compile communicable disease statistics and prepare reports
  • Track MRSA swabbing rates and prepare reports
  • Investigate new products as they pertain to infection control
  • Plan, implement and evaluate methods to improve infection control measures
  • Function as infection control consultant for employee health, staff and physicians
  • Chair the hospital infection control committee
  • Attend other committees as needed to report infection control data
  • Maintain infection control policies and procedures that reflect current standards of practice
  • Conduct infection control rounds to all patient care areas on a bi-annual basis and all other areas on an annual basis

What qualifications you will need:

  • Possess and maintain a current registered nurse license in the state of Indiana
  • Previous nursing experience in acute care nursing.
  • Knowledge of infection control standards and reporting requirements desired.
  • Computer literacy
  • Familiarity with Joint Commission, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, OSHA and the CDC guidelines pertaining to infection control.
  • Ability to prepare presentations and reports
  • Associate Degree in Nursing required, BSN preferred.
  • Certification in Infection Control preferred.
