Principal-in-Charge/Vice President - Transportation

Role Description: Huitt-Zollars, Inc has a full-time opportunity for a Principal-in-Charge/Vice President for our Dallas office. The candidate will have at least 20 years' experience and will be a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Texas. We are seeking a principal to manage the design of multiple transportation projects and drive business development efforts in North Texas. The successful candidate will lead roadway / bridge projects involving planning, engineering, construction and program management services.

Registration(s): Professional Engineer in the state of Texas

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering (BSCE).

Duties:

  • Manage TXDOT highway and roadway projects primarily in the greater DFW Metroplex.
  • Conduct business development activities for transportation projects and cultivate strong client relationships.
  • Lead and participate in meetings with TxDOT, Toll Road Authorities, cities, and counties to explore business development opportunities.
  • Oversee the design and execution of transportation projects, ensuring quality, scope compliance, and profitability.
  • Develop & negotiate project scopes, budgets, and schedules, including reviewing contract terms.
  • Monitor project progress including review of monthly invoices and progress reports.
  • Recruit, manage, and mentor staff ensuring performance excellence on assigned projects.
  • Participate in Industry Organizations such as ACEC-TX, ASCE, & PSPE.
  • Develop Annual Business Plans and Strategic Marketing Plans.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Takes active steps in the pursuit of winning new business or additional opportunities with existing clients and may be responsible for a stated portion of office sales goal. Assists and/or leads team in pursuit of new work (repeat work, SOQ and Proposals). Develops and/or executes project Win strategy.
  • Successfully and consistently functions as Lead Principal-in-Charge for their designated Practice Area in geographic market.
  • Competent, knowledgeable, service leader in the market(s) they service.
  • Understands and follows HZ QMS and Quality initiatives. Ensures quality control measures are being adhered to on projects and daily operations.
  • Prepares and follows comprehensive Project Framework Instructions and proper work planning for a project. Ensures proper staff is assigned and utilized on their projects.
  • Reviews project reports and performance metrics to track project progress and budget. Leads successful projects (profit, on-schedule, quality, satisfied client). Verifies client satisfaction routinely and shares feedback with team.
  • Proactively works with PM to strategize resolving issues that impact project performance. Reviews progress with PM at least monthly (including & completes vs. % spent) and that PM is adhering to weekly rhythm.
  • Successfully contributes to the overall profitability and financial performance on projects.
  • Oversees staff deliverables and production assigned to their projects to ensure client, legal, and company requirements are met.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering required.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Texas.
  • Minimum of 20 years of transportation engineering experience, particularly on TXDOT-related projects.
  • Solid roadway design experience with a proven track record of pursuing and securing TxDOT work as a Project Manager.
  • Design Build experience for TxDOT Projects.
  • TXDOT certifications are essential.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and MicroStation.
  • Successful business development experience and a strong understanding of the transportation market.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
