Description
Hitachi Rail Honolulu JV (HRH) is looking for an enthusiastic self-motivated Associate Track Inspector to work on our Honolulu Rail Project. As the successful candidate, your ideas for continuous improvement and creativity are welcome. The position is based in Pearl City/Honolulu, HI.
Accountabilities:
- Inspect railroad track structure, stock rail, special track work, turnouts, and 3rd rail for compliance with railroad and project track maintenance and inspection standards, state regulations, and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Track Safety Standards.
- Plan and implement a program of periodic inspections to provide optimum coverage of the railroad track in accordance with the track maintenance and inspection standards, state regulations, and FRA Track Safety Standards.
- Perform walking railroad track structure inspection for compliance with railroad and project standards and federal/state regulations.
- Perform walking inspection for 3rd rail and report any problems and best means of correction.
- During the track inspection, notice physical defects of on-track signaling equipment and on-track telecommunication equipment and report to the appropriate department.
- Detect deviations from standards, identify areas requiring repair or maintenance, determine the seriousness of the problems, and communicate with the Track Manager to implement remedial action on defects, speed restrictions, and pending repair.
- Repair or direct crews to repair or replace track-structure defects.
- Perform special inspections of the track structure in times of severe weather or other events that may damage the railroad.
- Produce accurate and detailed inspection reports.
- Provide clear and concise written and verbal communication of track conditions.
- Know, apply, and enforce applicable rules, regulations, and policies.
- Coordinate operation of a track geometry test cart and use the information to detect, locate, and evaluate deviations in cross-level, gauge, and track profile.
- Coordinate operation of ultrasonic test cart and use the information to detect, locate, and evaluate deviations.
- Determine the need for and conduct safety meetings and on-the-job training for other track employees regarding proper and safe inspection and maintenance procedures.
- Operate or direct crews on the operation of rerailing equipment.
- Perform investigations of train accidents and/or derailments.
- Determine probable cause of accidents or incidents and whether any Federal regulations were violated.
- Comfortable sharing knowledge of track inspections and standards with other track employees.
- Perform other tasks necessary to ensure the efficient operation of the rail transit system.
- Manage other tasks and perform other duties as assigned.
- Build and maintain effective internal and external customer relationships.
- The role requires flexibility and efficiency, including shift rotation, working on weekends and holidays, typical of major infrastructure projects.
Qualifications:
- Associate's degree in construction/business management, or equivalent work experience, preferred.
- Minimum 5 years' experience as a railroad track inspector, maintenance of way (MOW) Foreman, or MOW Supervisor.
- Knowledge of railroad track system construction, maintenance, testing, and inspection techniques.
- Safety criteria for track structure and engineering.
- Knowledgeable of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) track safety standards.
- Experience in track inspection (FRA or non-FRA) to help identify and evaluate opportunities for improvement.
Physical Demands/Work Environment:
- Constant physical effort, including standing, stooping, bending, and crouching, is required during regular work shifts of at least 8 hours per day.
- Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground and ballasted track, in varying weather conditions.
- Outdoor work environment periodically exposes employees to high levels of noise, grease, and dust typical of a construction project.
- Ability to lift and carry at least 50 pounds frequently.
- Ability to climb on and off on-track equipment safely.
- Ability to walk long distances.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with others.
- Excellent planning and time management abilities.
- Proven ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Proficient in Microsoft Programs (Outlook, Excel, Word), Adobe PDF Suite.
- Proficient in maintenance management systems (such as Maximo) to process preventative and corrective maintenance work orders.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Self-motivated, able to maintain schedules and execute activities with minimal supervision.
- Willingness to work flexible schedules and travel to any section of the rail transit system, as necessary.
- Valid Driver's License, willingness to obtain CDL if necessary.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

The salary range for this position is $72,480 - 108,720.
Final pay is determined by the candidate's experience, skillset and ability level, internal equity, and location.
