The Department of Epidemiology at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in New York City invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist with interest in cardiometabolic health and maternal health equity. The fellow will join the VIBE Research Lab's (enVironmental Impact of Birth Equity) team on a National Institute Diabetes and Digestive Kidney Diseases funded concurrent mixed-methods longitudinal cohort study related to racial and ethnic disparities of the progression or type 2 diabetes after having gestation diabetes. The study aims to discover policy levers that alter the neighborhood environment to disrupt lifecourse inequities in cardiometabolic health. The fellow will also have the opportunity to work on other VIBE Research Lab projects.

The fellow is expected to increase their methodological knowledge in place-based epidemiology, longitudinal modeling, agent-based modeling, and mixed methods. Additionally, the fellow will build skills for developing and implementing research studies and have opportunities to either lead or co-author manuscript publications. The fellow will perform population health research activities, including processing large datasets, performing statistical analyses, developing dynamic models, programming to build and implement model-inference systems, preparing manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals, delivering presentations at scientific meetings, and providing other research and methodological support for existing and ongoing studies.

The position offers a one-year postdoctoral fellowship with an expected start in August 2024 with the possibility for a second year with compensation commensurate with experience. The position includes an excellent benefits package and funds for travel to professional conferences and meetings. Individuals with the following characteristics will be competitive for the position: strong motivation and commitment to a career in disease modeling, excellent communication and quantitative skills, ability to conduct self-directed and collaborative research.


* PhD, DrPh, ScD, or equivalent degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, or other related social science disciplines.

* Comprehensive understanding of statistical concepts and methods.

* Proficiency in at least one programing language (e.g., R, SAS, STATA).

* Excellent communication skills (both oral and writing) and analytical skills.

* Strong interest in health equity research
