Description

DEFINITION
To provide support services to students in various District programs and services including, but not limited to, the Career/Transfer Center, Assessment Center, Counseling and Special Services, Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS), Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education (CARE) and various categorically funded programs; to refer students to other District services and opportunities as appropriate; and to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from an assigned supervisor. May oversee the work of student employees. May serve as a technical lead for lower level staff. Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Provide information and support services to students in various District programs and services including, but not limited to, the Career/Transfer Center, the Assessment Center, Counseling and Special Services, EOPS,CARE, and various categorically funded programs.
  2. Implement program activities that support student success as defined in the Student Success and Support Program (SSSP) for new, at risk, and continuing students.
  3. Respond to requests and inquiries from students, faculty, staff and the public; provide information on admissions, financial aid and registration policies and procedures; assist students to complete various forms and applications; refer students to other college services as appropriate.
  4. Design and develop promotional literature, pamphlets, forms, and displays of the various services offered by the District; update web pages and social media.
  5. Research, develop, and deliver presentations and workshops.
  6. Organize and market events and workshops; contact and make arrangements for speakers; coordinate facilities and resources.
  7. Provide assistance and support to faculty and administration, as requested.
  8. Perform data entry functions; enter, store, modify, retrieve and print student information.
  9. Perform a variety of routine clerical functions; schedule orientation and assessment appointments; maintain and order informational handouts and brochures.
  10. May process financial transactions or contracts; initiate requisitions and purchase orders, as required.
  11. May train and oversee the work of student employees; serve as a resource and technical lead for other staff.
  12. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
When assigned to the Counseling and Special Services or the Career/Transfer Center:
  1. Conduct program orientations and classroom presentations; inform and assist students with methods to utilize Center services and resources; organize and maintain a resources library.
  2. Assist students to research and pursue their college or career interests; maintain an inventory of occupational, vocational and training information and resources; meet with students to explore career options.
  3. Provide students with transfer information, publicize transfer activities and workshops, schedule and arrange campus visits with four year university representatives; assist students with college applications.
  4. Plan and implement events and activities such as but not limited to Transfer Day/College Night programs and specialized career and transfer workshops.
  5. Introduce students to career decision making models on an individual or group basis; train students in the use of career guidance programs.
  6. Provide students with job search information and assistance including local job market outlook, resources, leads and general encouragement and support.
  7. Conduct pre-employment workshops to assist students with the job search process including resume writing, interviewing techniques and etiquette, appropriate dress and follow-up procedures
When assigned to the Assessment Center
  1. Interview students to assess needs, interests, and individual academic requirements.
  2. Provide standardized and specialized assessment testing services to individual students and in support of various campus programs; provide testing information and materials; advise students in correct test taking procedures.
  3. Review transcripts and evaluate assessment test results to determine course placement level.
  4. Refer student to the appropriate career guidance courses, counseling services, or District services and programs, as appropriate.
  5. Maintain records and a database of services performed and individual assessment results.
  6. Provide and support off-campus assessment services to South Campus and area high schools, continuation schools, charter schools, academies, and adult schools.
  7. Update and maintain the unit's web page
When assigned to EOPS and CARE:
  1. Review student units, semesters and college transcripts to determine initial or continued eligibility for EOPS services; monitor academic progress, grant and financial aid eligibility of EOPS and CARE students.
  2. Schedule and conduct EOPS and CARE orientation.
  3. Engage and participate in campus and community outreach activities to promote the availability of EOPS and CARE services.
  4. Prepare comprehensive reports of EOPS and/or CARE student data to be submitted to the Chancellor's office each semester; compile and track data.
  5. Serve as program liaison for EOPS and CARE advisory committees, regional meetings, and other community programs serving educationally and economically disadvantaged students.
  6. Coordinate and attend program field trips and visits to four year colleges.
  7. Maintain and track data and information contained on the program application; make accurate progress reports.
When assigned to categorically funded programs:
  1. Provide assistance to students in categorically funded programs and other students receiving public assistance; ensure students adhere to established program rules and regulations; monitor student progress and contact students in non-compliance.
  2. Recruit students interested in non-traditional careers; assess participant's eligibility for the program; provide assistance to students enrolled in the program regarding career choices and opportunities.
  3. Recruit students for program enrollment; disseminate program information to high schools, migrant groups, local agencies and the public; conduct presentations regarding program services and opportunities.
Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and procedures of student interviewing and assessment.
  • Program goals, guidelines, policies, procedures and eligibility requirements of assigned program or service.
  • Current issues and trends relative to assigned area of responsibility.
  • Principles and techniques of job search including resume writing, interviewing and follow-up.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping.
  • Standard office procedures, methods and equipment including computers, internet research, database and MS Office software applications.
  • Basic webpage and social media operations.
  • Pertinent Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations and the California Education Code.
Ability to:
  • Provide assistance and information to students with educational or vocational barriers.
  • Provide information to students and the public regarding availability of District programs and services.
  • Determine eligibility and matriculation requirements for new and transfer students.
  • Recognize and understand student needs and make appropriate referrals.
  • Provide testing services to individual students and in support of various campus programs.
  • Respond to a wide variety of requests and inquiries from students, faculty, staff and the public.
  • Effectively present information to small and large groups.
  • Work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Prioritize assignments; organize and work on several projects simultaneously.
  • Work in a dynamic, fast paced, and high demand environment.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students and staff.
  • Sit for prolonged periods of time; extensive use of a computer keyboard; lift 30 lbs.
Education and Experience Requirements:
