DescriptionGENERAL SUMMARY:Working very independently, under very direct supervision of the principal investigator as well as a postdoctoral associate in the lab, this candidate will help lead an independent research project in the lab due to their significant prior research experience. Typically, candidates will have performed at least 2 years of research as an undergraduate and at least 1 year of postgraduate research experience in academia or industry. Candidate will be responsible for a project or sub-project in the lab for new delivery or genome editing technology development. The research responsibilities will be project management, designing experiments, executing experiments, working with the rest of the team on data analysis and interpretation, and presenting results to the principal investigator and other researchers. This is a unique position as it holds more leadership responsibility than is typical for a research assistant given the maturity and experience of the candidate. Beyond research responsibilities, candidate will work under the direction of the Principal Investigator to manage the entire lab. This role will involve the full scope of management responsibilities in a research laboratory, including fiscal/budget management, supervision of staff activities, inventory management, lab safety standards, and animal protocol management.  We are looking for sharp, creative individuals who are excited to work in a fast-paced environment and within teams to advance the research.PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:1.               This is an important leadership position in the lab for lab management, animal work, and for managing an important delivery or gene editing project in collaboration with PI and postdoc in the lab. 2.               Independently performs routine and non-routine experiments, which are moderate to complex. Experiments include molecular cloning, tissue culture, liquid chromatography, animal work, and sequencing. 3.               As part of this impendence, candidate will be responsible for an entire project or sub-project, including design, execution, interpretation, and planning of next steps.  4.               Supervises operation of the laboratory, including overseeing the use of laboratory funds, supply inventory and staff activities.5.               Responsible for the coordination of all regulatory and compliance activities for the lab.6.               Calculate, transcribes, and analyzes data using advanced statistical techniques.7.               Maintains long-term tissue cultures of human cell lines and monitors cells for viability and contamination.8.               Maintains animal protocol for the lab, as well as training and help all animal work in the lab. This person will be the point person for anyone in the lab who wants to get started with animal work. 9.               Performs literature searches and helps to prepare presentations and written articles for publication.10.            In collaboration with PI, establishes new and modifies existing research techniques.11.            Coordinates schedule of tests and procedures.12.            Coordinates lab activities such as infection control, radiation safety, and bio-safety activities.13.            Assists in the orientation and training of new staff.14.            All other duties as assigned.QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS:BS in biological/physical scienceMust have at least two-year experience in a directly related research setting (undergraduate experience is fine) and at least 1 year of experience in academic or industry research setting post-undergraduate.SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIESREQUIRED:•      High scientific maturity to lead a project and balance lab management responsibilities•      High proficiency with scientific literature and ability to brainstorm and drive new research directions in the lab•      Ability to identify potential problems and trouble-shoot solutions.•      Comfort working with rodents and managing animal protocol in the lab•      Drive to execute independent projects•      The desire to be an integral part of a cutting-edge research team•      Knowledge and experience with relevant molecular biology, biochemistry, and cell culture techniques, genetic engineering, and animal care is preferable. •      Familiarity with programming languages, such as Python, for data analysis would be a plus, but is not necessary.  •      Sound analytical and organizational skills.•      Requires good oral and written communication skills.•      Must be able to logically and effectively structure tasks and set priorities.•      Demonstrated ability to analyze data statistically and to logically present it.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:Responsible for training and orienting new staff and managing the lab as lab manager.
