Position Summary:
Assist in the nursing care and preparation of surgical patients. Function as a member of the sterile team in donning gown and gloves, creating and maintaining a sterile field, and issuing instruments to surgeons. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric age groups.

Detailed responsibilities:
* EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES - Work with staff team to gather necessary supplies, equipment and instruments
* EQUIPMENT - Set up tables, instruments and supplies required for specific operations
* PATIENT CARE - Assist in preparing and draping of patient and operating area; prepare and maintain sterile field for surgical procedures
* DATA - Maintain and assist with computerized data and charting, probing, and digital x-rays; maintain dental laboratory slips and check in lab cases
* SPECIMENS - Assist in maintenance and care of specimens; prepare specimens for laboratory analysis
* EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES - Decontaminate all equipment, instruments, and supplies
* PATIENT CARE - Assist with table equipment, patient positioning, and application of plaster casts and dressings
* DOCUMENTATION - Document all patient care activities
* STOCK - Perform restocking duties as necessary
* SPECIAL PROCEDURES - Function as a service coordinator with RN for special procedure preparations
* SPECIAL PROCEDURES - Maintain suture levels and assist in high level surgical procedures including vascular/aneurysm surgical procedures
* RESPONSE - Respond immediately to surgical supply requests from the Operating Room; must react with a sense of urgency, be courteous and service oriented at all times
* SURGICAL SUPPLY - Pick supplies, instrumentation, and other required items for the completion of Operating Room cases; arrange supplies in the case carts according to procedure ensuring accuracy and proper documentation; deliver completed case carts to the appropriate locations as determined by the Surgical Services Department
* SURGICAL SUPPLY - Communicate and find instrumentation requiring rapid turnaround for the next case; understand event related sterility and sterility indicators; check for discrepancies and take corrective action before making delivery of location
* SURGICAL SUPPLY - Report instrument malfunction and place instruments in the appropriate location for repair
* DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops
* SURGICAL SUPPLY - Receive used case carts and deliver to the decontamination room
* PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols
* PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes
* PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
* PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner
* PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"

Physical Conditions:
Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
