The Nurse Consultant I provides Infectious Disease and Wound Care Management coverage to prisons as part of Department of Adult Corrections/Comprehensive Health and will be responsible for Franklin, Harnett, Orange, Sanford and occasionally Roanoke River and Warren facilities. This position will be based out of Central Prison in Wake county. This Nurse Consultant I provides expertise in infection disease/prevention for Comprehensive Health Section.  Duties include but not limited to:

* Responsible for providing technical guidance and expertise to assess and develop tools to meet policy requirements for infection disease/prevention program.  
* Must maintain knowledge of policies and procedures of the Department of Adult Correction & Health and Wellness Section, plus knowledge of NC communicable disease rules and regulations. 
* Position requires expertise in wound management, as well as advanced skills in research utilization, program development, and quality improvement. 
* Position requires understanding of long-term care, environmental practices as well as HAI's. 
* Position provides HIV testing, counseling and prevention education in assigned prisons. 
* Provides post test positive counseling with risk reduction planning to HIV positive inmates. 
* Prepares monthly reports and completes reporting requirements for CDC and DHHS on all HIV positive inmates.  
* Assesses HIV positive inmates on regular basis to determine medication compliance, adverse reactions, laboratory values, complaints, etc. 
* Performs discharge planning to include follow-up appointments with community providers, medication assistance, housing, etc. 
* Monitors and tracks all Hepatitis C and Hepatitis B, and active TB patients on treatment at assigned units. 
* Updates custody/ medical staff of changes and prepares facility field trainers to perform blood borne pathogen classes. 
* Provides education updates to field staff on infectious diseases as needed. Serves as an Infection Prevention expert. 

Position will work a forty-hour week typically Monday-Friday. Requires participation in meetings and trainings, may dictate overnight travel and workings hours outside the normal 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. workday.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.  

 

NC Department of Adult Correction (DAC):

The Dept. of Adult Correction is responsible for the care, custody and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws.  This department includes State Prisons with custody, healthcare and facility operations staff as well as the division of Community Supervision.  Other divisions include Administration, Compliance & Accreditation, Comprehensive Health Services, Internal Affairs & Intelligence Operations, Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission and Rehabilitation & Reentry.
