Job Overview: The Histology Assistant position assists the pathologist during the gross processing of surgical specimens.

Qualifications:

Required:

* High School diploma or equivalent required

Preferred:

* Classes in biology and related sciences preferred

Scheduling Requirements:

* Per Diem
* Day Shift
* Variable Hours

Essential Functions:

* Accurately coverslips and labels prepared slides, matches them to working drafts and arranges them for screening by the cytologists
* Enters patient and specimen information into the Pathology Information system
* Enters patient charges into the Hospital Information system
* Performs maintenance of tissue processing instrument
* Performs rapid H & E and Diff-quik staining on tissue specimen slides
* Prepares smears and cytospins from body fluid specimens in accordance with established procedures
* Prepares specimens by Frozen Section technique
* Prepares tissue specimens for gross examination
* Procures specimens from the OR, Special Procedures, and Same Day Surgery areas of the hospital
* Responsible for filing slides in accordance with established procedure
* Responsible for staining of all cytology slices using the modified Pap Stain procedure
* Responsible for the daily rotation and filtration of stains, alcohol, and xylene
* Verified that required information has been provided on the requisitions and that the specimen has been properly submitted, fixed and labeled per the patient ID policy
* Performs all other duties as assigned
