GENERAL SUMMARY:
Saginaw Public Schools Parent Educators are responsible for planning, providing and documenting home visits to families with young children who reside in the School District of the City of Saginaw. In addition, Parent Educators are responsible for monitoring development of these young children at regular intervals with parents, either monthly, bi-weekly, or weekly, depending on the family's need. The major focus of the Parent Educator is to partner with parents to ensure future school readiness.

  6. Skilled in the use of technology, specifically computers
  7. Excellent writing and verbal skills
  8. Ability to maintain emotional control in stressful situations
  9. Ability to maintain confidentiality
  10. Ability to accept responsibility, maintain organization, and be self-motivated
  11. Ability to relate to at-risk infants and toddlers and their families
  12. Ability to understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions
  13. Ability to communicate effectively
  14. Ability to work in a multi-cultural, urban setting and develop a rapport with students, staff, parents and the school community

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Prepare, provide, and document home visits to families with children birth - 5 years of age
  2. Enroll families in Early On, if applicable
  3. Involve parents in all aspects of the program; personal visits, group meetings, screenings
  4. Assist in data collection
  5. Present relevant information on child development, language, motor and social skills and age appropriate activities
  6. Model appropriate verbal interactions, communication techniques and discipline techniques with child
  7. Assist parents in developing strategies for strengthening their effectiveness as parents
  8. Address parent concerns and research information and community resources as needed
  9. Monitor progress of child's cognitive, motor and affective development
  10. Provide health and developmental screening for all children on an annual basis, from birth thru 5 years of age, including Ages & Stages Questionnaires, Early Intervention Profile and Brigance
  11. Recognize behavior and/or development of child that deviates from expected norms
  12. Complete appropriate referrals for additional evaluation as needed
  13. Actively recruit new families and children for the program
  14. Prepare and distribute materials on child development to families
  15. Maintain files to include records of all screenings and transfer to appropriate elementary school
  16. Establish good rapport and maintain an on-going positive relationship with each family in the program through active listening, encouragement, guidance and feedback
  17. Perform other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  1. High school graduate or equivalent
  2. Bachelor's degree in Child Development or related field preferred or pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education/Development, Social Work, or Elementary Education
  3. Additional training in parenting programs
  4. Successful previous experience working with children birth - 5 years of age and working with families
  5. Previous experience working in a culturally diverse setting

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Healthy Families America and Parents as Teachers certification preferred
  2. Attend any training as mandated

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  1. School environment where there is no physical discomfort due to temperature, dust
or the like
  1. Noise level in this work environment may be moderate to loud

METHOD OF EVALUATION:
The Birth Thru Five Coordinator evaluates this position every year. The evaluation form is available from the Human Resources and Labor Relations Department.
