About the Position

The County of San Luis Obispo Public Health Department is currently recruiting for a fulltime, Public Health Nutritionist I to join the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program. Must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

Public Health Nutritionist I is part of a career series for Public Health Nutritionist I and II. Classes in this series conduct, plan, and coordinate nutritional and breastfeeding services for the Community Based Comprehensive Perinatal Program, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (W.I.C.), and other public health care programs; provide consultative, educational, and technical services in the field of nutrition and breastfeeding; and do other related work as required.

Examples of Duties:

Assess family income and verify residency according to WIC Program policies; inform WIC clients of right and responsibilities; conduct individual nutrition and breastfeeding assessments for high and low risk WIC clients; provide individual nutrition and breastfeeding counseling for high and low risk WIC clients; develop individual nutrition care plans; assist with development of nutrition education classes; assist in arranging nutrition and breastfeeding services, assist in providing nutrition and breastfeeding classes, refer clients to appropriate medical and social services; assist with paraprofessional WIC staff trainings; assist with planning and conducting WIC staff meetings; attend meetings as they relate to the WIC Program; oversee day to day activities of assigned clinic sites, mentor paraprofessional staff; ensure compliance with State and Federal regulations; perform quality improvement audits, act in capacity of Vendor Liaison.

Knowledge of:

Nutritional needs of pregnancy, lactating, and postpartum women; nutritional needs of infants and children; Techniques, strategies, and practices of nutrition and breastfeeding; education methods and techniques; food requirements based on various age and occupational groups; community health organizations and resources; food acceptance habits of different ethnic and age groups; comparative costs of foods in relation to their nutritional value; counseling techniques; standard office software.

This recruitment may be used to fill future permanent, substitute, limited term, and temporary positions, both full-time and part-time throughout the County.

The Ideal Candidate

Minimum Qualifications:

Public Health Nutritionist I: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in Nutritional Sciences, Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, Dietetics or Public Health Nutrition and one year of training in a dietetic internship approved by the American Dietetic Association. (A master's degree in foods and nutrition may be substituted for the internship program.)

Bilingual in Spanish is preferred, but not required for this position.

Licenses and Certificates:

* Must be Registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration - RD eligible accepted.
* A valid California Driver's license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained through employment.
