Position Summary

Provides for instruction of students by developing, selecting, and modifying instructional plans and materials and presenting them using instructional techniques which meet the needs of all students. Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of students. Supervises students in a variety of school-related settings and activities. Monitors and evaluates student performance. Develops and implements plans to improve student performance. Maintains required records and follows required procedures and practices. Builds the capacity of colleagues in meeting the needs of English learners.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1. Establishes clear goals and objectives related to the World-class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) Standards, English Language Acquisition curricula, and School Improvement Plan.

2. Prepares differentiated English proficiency level appropriate lessons, assignments, and instructional materials.

3. Establishes learning objectives and model performance indicators consistent with appraisal of student needs, curriculum demands, and language development.

4. Plans, delivers, and models language objectives in instruction.

5. Prepares, administers and scores screenings and assessments, and maintains student data records including a grade book.

6. Provides relevant data related to language proficiency levels and language development to school teams.

7. Uses appropriate instructional strategies including, but not limited to, partner and group interaction, response frames, visuals, academic language and vocabulary development, integration of language and content, modeling and multimedia teaching aids to present subject matter to students.

8. Evaluates student progress using appropriate assessment techniques that are level appropriate including the WIDA Speaking and Writing Rubrics, formative assessments, state and local mandated assessments

9. Maintains order and discipline in the classroom conducive to effective learning; takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.

10. Collaborates with colleagues to create a flexible classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process through both push-in and pull-out services, and enables each student to achieve learning objectives.

11. Confers with parents and students regarding progress/problems of assigned students; arranges and participates in teacher-parent or teacher-student conferences, and coordinates parent outreach.

12. Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, textbooks, materials and facilities.

13. Keeps complete records as required by law, Board policy and administrative regulation.

14. Participates in staff/faculty meetings and provides input regarding the planning of instructional goals, objectives, methods, differentiation, scaffolding and incorporation of language development strategies. May serve on special committees.

15. Maintains skill and knowledge base in current trends in language acquisition, research and methodology in instructional techniques, technology, multicultural content, problem solving and interdisciplinary connections by participating in system sponsored professional development and independent pursuit of learning.

16. Provides professional development related to language development and cultural competence to school staff. Encourages school staff in communicating with non-native English speaking parents.

17. Participates in school events and encourages ELA student and family participation in those events.

18. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

* Hold or eligible for a certification as issued by the Maryland State Department of Education.

Experience

* Three years of successful classroom teaching experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

* Knowledge of school organization, curriculum, teaching techniques; current trends, research and materials of instruction in field of specialization.
* Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office and school board staff, students, parents and community.
* Strong working knowledge of the teaching/learning process.
* Experience with providing instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education.
* Proficient with incorporating technology into curriculum; demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (Microsoft Office Suite-Word, Excel, Outlook and/or PowerPoint preferred).
* Demonstrated ability to provide excellent oral and written communication with diverse populations.
* Must be able to attend school meetings, programs and activities outside the instructional day as necessary.
* Job requires direct in-person provision of service, therefore punctual, regular and predictable attendance is essential
* Demonstrated ability in techniques necessary to instruct students in area of assignment.

* Have the ability to stand, sit, walk and climb stairs which allows for independent mobility throughout the school building/facility to include floor levels, hallways, stairs and playground areas. Ability to stoop, bend and move heavy objects.
* Crisis intervention may require participating in physical restraints. Must be able to observe student behavior, hear students and school public address/alarm systems and smell smoke or dangerous chemicals.
