Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Nursing

Current registered nurse license from the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners

Current BLS Healthcare Provider CPR certification or Instructor certification

Certification in vision, hearing and Texas Risk Assessment for Type 2 Diabetes

Provide own transportation

Five years of experience as public school nurse

Ability to provide training and presentations in front of large audiences

Strong organizational, communication and intervention skills

Strong writing skills

Possess strong interdepartmental teamwork and empowerment to meet the needs of nursing staff, educational staff, students and parents

Primary Purpose:

Develop, implement and coordinate a comprehensive program of health services for the school district. Primary job function is to train, mentor and to provide support as needed to staff, parents and community members. Assist the Director of Health Services to ensure that nursing staff members meet the Standards of Care practice as designated by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

    1. Plan and conduct orientation for all new school nurses and clinic aides.
    2. Mentor newly hired RN staff and provide guidance and assistance with clinic management.
    3. Assist with initiating student Individual Healthcare Plans and collaborate with campuses as demanded to collaborate and initiate a plan that promotes student learning in the school setting.
    4. Provide training to Health Services staff for specialized procedures which serve the needs of children with disabilities and/or health conditions in the school setting.
    5. Assist in planning and conducting professional development and certification programs for nurses and clinic aides.
    6. Directly and indirectly provides health education, health resources and curriculum recommendations.
    7. Participates as a health specialist to promote a healthy school environment conducive to learning.
    8. Collaborate with community agencies to facilitate and provide continuing education opportunities which improve school nurse practice and client outcomes.
    9. Maintain an awareness of developments in health fields that could enhance the quality and effectiveness of the school health program.
    10. Assist the Director of Health Services with quality control by conducting clinic audits and campus visits to monitor nurse practice, ensure adherence to the professional standards outlined by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners.
    11. Act as a liaison between Health Services staff and administration, parents and agencies in the interest of student welfare.
    12. Act as a liaison to coordinate school/community health activities and services between school, community and health care providers.
    13. Utilize equipment and technology for delivery of health care services.
    14. Attend Health Services meetings as set forth by the Director of Health Services.
    15. Assist with delivery of health care and facilitate referrals to appropriate medical resources for ESC personnel.
    16. Other duties as assigned.

Personal computer and all appropriate office equipment.

Working Conditions:

Physical demands, moderate lifting, standing for long hours at a time. Mental demands, must be able to maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent district wide travel. Exposure to communicable disease.
