Responsibilities:

  • Patient Evaluation: Perform comprehensive assessments of patients presenting with respiratory symptoms, including cough, dyspnea, wheezing, chest pain, and hemoptysis, conducting detailed medical histories, physical examinations, and diagnostic tests.
  • Diagnostic Testing: Order and interpret diagnostic tests, such as pulmonary function tests (spirometry, lung volumes, diffusion capacity), imaging studies (chest X-rays, CT scans), bronchoscopy, and arterial blood gas analysis, to establish accurate diagnoses and guide treatment plans.
  • Treatment Planning: Develop individualized treatment plans based on diagnostic findings, patient symptoms, disease severity, and patient preferences, utilizing a combination of pharmacological therapies, respiratory support modalities, pulmonary rehabilitation, and lifestyle interventions.
  • Medication Management: Prescribe and manage medications commonly used in the treatment of respiratory disorders, including bronchodilators, corticosteroids, antibiotics, mucolytics, oxygen therapy, and biologic agents, while monitoring for efficacy, side effects, and treatment compliance.
  • Bronchoscopy and Interventional Procedures: Perform bronchoscopy procedures for diagnostic purposes (biopsy, lavage, brushings) and therapeutic interventions (airway stenting, bronchial thermoplasty, tumor debulking) to manage airway disorders, lung tumors, and other pulmonary conditions.
  • Critical Care Management: Provide critical care management for patients with acute respiratory failure, exacerbations of COPD or asthma, pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), pulmonary embolism, and other life-threatening respiratory conditions in intensive care settings.
  • Lung Cancer Screening and Management: Screen high-risk individuals for lung cancer using appropriate screening modalities (low-dose CT scans), diagnose lung cancer through tissue biopsy or cytology, and develop comprehensive treatment plans, including surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or targeted therapies.
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation: Refer eligible patients to pulmonary rehabilitation programs to optimize respiratory function, enhance exercise capacity, reduce dyspnea, and improve overall quality of life for individuals with chronic lung diseases such as COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, and lung transplantation recipients.
  • Patient Education: Educate patients and their families about their respiratory conditions, treatment options, self-management strategies, smoking cessation, vaccination recommendations, and environmental triggers to empower patients in managing their respiratory health and minimizing disease exacerbations.
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams, including primary care physicians, respiratory therapists, chest surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, and palliative care specialists, to provide comprehensive, coordinated care for patients with complex respiratory disorders.

Qualifications:

  • Medical Degree: Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school.
  • Residency Training: Completion of a residency program in Internal Medicine accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or equivalent training program.
  • Fellowship Training: Completion of a fellowship program in Pulmonary Medicine accredited by the ACGME or equivalent training program, focusing on the diagnosis and management of respiratory diseases and critical care medicine.
  • Board Certification: Board certification or eligibility in Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) or equivalent certifying body, demonstrating expertise in the practice of pulmonology and critical care medicine.
  • State Licensure: Valid and unrestricted medical license to practice as a physician in the state of employment, complying with state licensing requirements and continuing medical education obligations.
  • Clinical Experience: Demonstrated clinical competence in evaluating and managing patients with a wide range of respiratory disorders, including COPD, asthma, interstitial lung diseases, lung cancer, pulmonary infections, pulmonary hypertension, and sleep-related breathing disorders.
  • Procedural Skills: Proficiency in performing bronchoscopy procedures, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, with a focus on patient safety, procedural efficacy, and infection control practices.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients, families, caregivers, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams, conveying complex medical information in a clear, empathetic, and culturally sensitive manner.
  • Critical Thinking: Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities to interpret diagnostic findings, formulate differential diagnoses, and develop evidence-based treatment plans tailored to individual patient needs, while considering comorbidities, treatment preferences, and prognostic factors.
