SUMMARY

This job description defines the requirements and responsibilities of the School Nurse for Early College High School @ Delaware State University (ECHS). This position will be a full-time 10-month position. All pay for this position will be divided by 26 pays and paid through the regular state paycheck.

JOB GOAL

To provide a healthy and safe school environment for the students and staff of ECHS.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is intended to be illustrative rather than complete, and serves to show major duties and responsibilities of a School Nurse at ECHS. It does not express or imply that these are the only duties to be performed by the person in this position. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provides health care (including responding effectively to emergency medical situations) and administers prescribed medications for the school
  • Screening and referral for health conditions
  • Keeps accurate health records on all students and supervises compliance with immunizations and communicable disease regulations
  • Promote a healthy and safe school environment
  • Communicate with parents, physicians, staff and community as necessary to ensure student and staff wellness.
  • Maintain students with medical needs requiring nursing support on weekly community outings and field trips.
  • Serve in a leadership role for health policies and programs and as a liaison between school personnel, family, community, and health care providers
  • Counsels students on medical issues and conducts short and long term planning to address the individual health needs of students
  • Work collaboratively with other staff
  • Maintain professional competence through participation in professional development activities
  • Attend meetings and other activities, as determined by the school leader
  • Coach, support, and/or consult with individual or teams of teachers and/or students regarding progress monitoring, and provide feedback where necessary.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must hold or be eligible to hold a State of Delaware Certificate for School Nurse.
Experience working with students in a school setting preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

• Bachelor's of Science in Nursing required

• Three years clinical nursing experience required

• Licensed registered nurse meeting state qualifications for school nurse.

• Must hold and maintain a valid and current certification in CPR and in the use of AED

• Demonstrates strong ability to communicate with children and families in writing and speaking.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of staff members or students.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Adequate computer skills with experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint preferred.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; hearing and speaking to exchange information; visual acuity; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 37.5% sitting, 25% walking, and 37.5% standing. The job is performed in an office and outdoor environment under minimal temperature variations and some hazardous conditions. Potential hazardous exposure to blood and body fluids.
