Purpose

This position performs truck and equipment operation duties in support of street construction and maintenance projects and sanitation services.
Essential Job Functions

  1. Operates a variety of trucks, equipment, tractors, and rollers.
  2. Maintains and repairs drainage systems; cleans gutters, sidewalks, and catch basins.
  3. Performs truck and equipment maintenance; performs pre- and post-operation inspections; reports repair needs to supervisor.
  4. Operates a truck to collection and transport yard waste and bulk trash.
  5. Operates a vacuum truck.
  6. Collects litter from streets and city property.
  7. Operates a bush-hog, mower, and weed eater.
  8. Installs traffic control devices at work sites.
  9. Seeds and straws land for grass.
  10. Removes trees, limbs, and brush from streets and right-of-way.
  11. Operates a bucket truck.
  12. Installs holiday decorations.
  13. Paves streets and repairs potholes.
  14. Operates a snow plow and participates in snow and ice removal operations.
  15. Performs related duties.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Knowledge of the techniques, equipment, and supplies used in public works maintenance.
  2. Knowledge of city and departmental safety policies and procedures.
  3. Knowledge of the geography of the town, including street names and locations.
  4. Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles, trucks, and equipment.
  5. Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
  6. Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
  7. Skill in oral and written communication.

Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • More than three years of related experience required.
  • Must obtain a valid commercial driver's license issued by the State of Georgia of the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Additional Information

Guidelines include traffic laws, work safety policies, and city policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

  • The work consists of related truck and equipment operation duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to operate trucks and other equipment in support of the maintenance of streets and related infrastructure. Successful performance contributes to the provision of safe and well-maintained city infrastructure.

  • Contacts are typically with coworkers, vendors, and the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

  • The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light objects and climbs ladders.
  • The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
