Director, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Advanced Practice (NP/PA)

Purpose of Role: The Director, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Advanced Practice is responsible for directing, coordinating, and managing the health care services delivered by the NICU APRN team. As the NICU advanced practice clinical leader, manager, and role model, s/he will drive the hiring, orientation, precepting, mentoring, and peer review of all NICU APRN team members. In collaboration with the Associate Chief for Clinical Affairs in the Section of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, the Director will coordinate and evaluate NICU advanced practice care delivery and ensure required advanced practice knowledge and competencies to assess, diagnose, and treat acute and chronic health problems in neonatal patients. This position serves as an organizational and clinical leader representing neonatal advanced practice providers APRNs. This position reports to the Chief Nursing Officer.

Essential Responsibilities:

A. Lead unit-level administration, leadership of the operational, financial, and human resource functions and activities for NICU APRNs.
  • Participate in budget planning and resource allocation
  • Coordinate the NICU and Mother-Baby Unit (MBU) staffing schedules with the rotating medical resident schedule to assure adequate 24/7 coverage.
  • Review staffing models in collaboration with physician and nurse executives to ensure: 24/7 staffing of the OUMC NICU & 6 PM-6AM staffing of the OUMC high risk newborn deliveries.
  • Ensure accurate reporting and submission of worked time for NICU APRN team - tracking PTO, holiday time, stipends, etc.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Chief for Clinical Affairs in the Section of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine and Oklahoma Children's Hospital financial and human resources leaders on contract negotiations, budgetary issues, regulation of professional expenses, monthly expenses, etc.

B. Innovate, lead and support advanced programming and research that maximizes APRNs in progressive NICU models of health care delivery and value-based care.
  • Collaborate with Department of Neonatology to advance clinical program growth, outcomes, nursing and medical education, and research efforts.
  • Lead and collaborate in the review, development, and implementation of NICU APRN protocols, procedural guidelines and practice guidelines.
  • Collaborate in the development of population-focused evidence-based clinical programs, standards and policies/procedures.
  • Develop new NICU APRN roles in collaboration with the Children's Hospital, OU Health System, and the OU CON. (i.e. research, clinic, resuscitation/ delivery room, Neoflight, MBU, community outreach, VON coordinator, APRN supervisor, community NICUs, etc.)
  • Lead NICU APRN team in strategic care activities and improvement initiatives to ensure best outcomes and developmentally appropriate patient- and family-centered care.

C. Lead and/or serve on a variety of appropriate internal and external committees to advance/represent Neonatal APRN practice.
  • Work collaboratively with the CON to develop, implement and evaluate academic programs as they relate to preparing future NICU registered nurses and APRNs.
  • Participates in teaching, scholarly activities and service commensurate with criteria for faculty rank.

D. Cultivate and nurture a culture of collaboration, excellence, curiosity, and compassion with internal and external stakeholders/constituencies to advance the mission of Oklahoma Children's Hospital and the OU CON.
  • Act as the liaison between the NICU advanced practice team and the Section of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, including, but not limited to, the Associate Chief for Clinical Affairs, NICU Medical Director, Section Chief, and physician faculty and trainees, OUMC Division of Nursing and the OU College of Nursing.
  • Build collaborative academic relationships to support NICU and MBU clinical rotations for undergraduate and graduate nursing
  • Oversee the development and implementation of academic/professional development programs for NICU APRNs
  • Participate and coordinate APRN team in planning and execution of annual Neonatology continuing education regional conference.
  • Contribute to the orientation and teaching of medical residents and fellows providing clinical service in the Oklahoma Children's NICU and MBU.
  • Drive APRN recruitment and retention, and associate engagement including hiring, orientation, annual performance evaluations, peer review, continuing education, and mentoring.
  • Facilitate credentialing process to ensure proper credentialing of all APRN team members.
  • Maintain contemporary knowledge of industry changes related to licensure, certification, and credentialing to ensure compliance.

General Responsibilities:
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief Nursing Officer or CON Department Chair.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: A minimum of a master's degree in Nursing is required. A Doctoral degree in Nursing is preferred.

Minimum Professional Experience: Four years practice experience as a Neonatal APRN and five years progressive leadership/management experience in nursing or advanced practice operations. A commitment to working with diverse populations.

Preferred Professional Experience: Experience in an academic health system and/or experience in a multi-hospital system or integrated delivery system. Leadership experience in managing advanced practice provider leadership or clinical practice management. Formal teaching and academic administrative experience.

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Candidates must hold active national certification as a Neonatal Advanced Practice Nurse and licensure or be eligible for licensure as an RN and an APRN in Oklahoma. Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) required upon hire.
