AFVN Ringling College AmeriCorps VISTA Intercultural Program

According to the 2019 AAC&U Hunger on Campus assessment, over 45% of respondents reported experiencing food insecurity within the last 30 days. This study also highlighted that African-American, LGBTQ+ and other marginalized student populations experienced food insecurities at higher rates, which connects to the population that the RCAD Center for Diversity & Inclusion (CDI) serves. Understanding these statistics and that RCAD is located in the heart of multiple Sarasota County food deserts, CDI's objective is to create a multipronged approach to eradicate barriers of marginalized and low-income students, staff and faculty to overcome food and hygiene insecurities by facilitating their access to economic support and resources at RCAD. This initiative will be centralized in the establishment and expansion of a food and hygiene pantry named Remy's Cupboard focused on servicing students, staff, and faculty who are experiencing food and hygiene insecurities on our RCAD campus, while simultaneously building a strategic plan for sustainability through grant writing and connecting to other resources. Member Duties : Through a number of strategies including campus-community collaboration, assessment collection, programming & access, & philanthropy, the AmeriCorps VISTA will be responsible for solidifying & expanding Ringling College of Art & Design's CDI Food & Hygiene Pantry which will directly impact the food & hygiene security of students, staff, & faculty on our campus. In order to achieve this, the VISTA member will create, implement, & establish a set of guidelines & procedures for the utilization of CDI's pantry as well as the recruitment & management of student volunteers. The VISTA will develop procedures & conduct assessments that track the usage, success, growth & measures the campus community needs. The member will be responsible for the facilitation of the Queer Closet, which is operated in conjunction with the pantry.
