JOB SUMMARY:

This position is accountable for providing a full range of professional nursing care services for the District.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

General Experience:

* Graduation from an accredited nursing program;
* Registered Professional Nurse (RN) License;
* 5 years or more experience as a Registered Nurse prefered;
* First Aid, CPR and AED Certification preferred;
* Child Hearing and Vision Testing Certification preferred;
* Certified School Nurse license through the Illinois State Board of Education preferred;
* School Nurse experience in a large school setting preferred;
* Bilingual - Spanish preferred.

School Year Position - Starting at $27.47 per hour

LICENSURES, CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

* Must be able to complete Professional Educator License and receive Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and/or Certified School Nurse within two (2) years of appointment;
* Incumbents in this class may be required to travel between buildings.

CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

* Per State requirements.

* Knowledge of medical, therapeutic and psychiatric nursing interventions and methods;
* Knowledge of pediatric nursing;
* Some knowledge of related technology, such as insulin pumps and nebulizers;
* Some knowledge of special needs children, special education, pregnant and parenting teens;
* Interpersonal skills;
* Skill in administering and interpreting specific health screening and assessment tools;
* Skill in administering medications, including safety and adverse reactions;
* Skill in basic computer literacy;
* Skill in cardiopulmonary resuscitation;
* Skill in organizational and time management;
* Skill in otoscopy, audiometry (pure-tone screening), and tympanometry;
* Skill in performing height and weight measurements;
* Skill in physical assessment and observation, such as BP, skin color, breath sounds, lice screenings, and blood glucose assessment;
* Skill in verbal and written communication, especially report writing;
* Skill in vision screening using Snellen/MOTV charts;
* Ability to act as a role model to health care staff by demonstrating professional behaviors;
* Ability to analyze and evaluate proper care and treatment;
* Ability to develop therapeutic relationships with students;
* Ability to encourage and facilitate cooperation, pride trust and group identity to foster commitment and team work;
* Ability to listen and provide empathetic assistance to students and families in meeting their needs and carrying out prescribed treatments;
* Ability to respond to emergencies;
* Ability to work in a fast paced environment;

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following identifies the primary and essential functions of the position and is not intended to be an

exhaustive listing of all duties.

* Attends workshops and training sessions in order to maintain skills;
* Changes dressings;
* Communicates with families, staff and community liaisons to interpret and facilitate the transfer of health data;
* Conducts and supervises health screenings on children which includes screenings include vision,muscle-eye balance, hearing, height and weight (growth), scoliosis, and educational medical information;
* Counsels staff, parents and students regarding health needs including pregnant and parenting teens;
* Depending upon the age of the student population for which health services are being provided, may initiate the permanent health record;
* Distributes and maintains records of controlled drugs and insures their security;
* Documents nursing interventions on medical records;
* Ensures cleanliness of equipment and environment;
* Establishes, maintains, reviews and updates student health records on an ongoing basis;
* Facilitates connections to community primary health and dental providers and, at times, facilitates transportation and funding for health and dental appointments;
* Gathers and reviews health information for IEP's, IFSP's and SST assessments;
* Independently implements the nursing process with students including carrying out physicians orders regarding diet, medication and treatment; performs assessments;
* Instructs students, staff and family members regarding treatments, nursing plans and related patient care issues directed toward an awareness and understanding of health issues;
* Interprets medical records to the school staff, as necessary;
* Interprets vision and hearing results, including tympanometry, and determines the need for rescreening or referral. Monitors ongoing hearing and vision concerns;
* Keeps current on local, State and national health issues and concerns;
* Maintains availability of medications and supplies;
* Maintains records and makes reports including records for third-party billings;
* Makes decisions in routine cases;
* Monitors and ensures quality care through observation and evaluation;
* Organizes and facilitates community advisory boards regarding input, review and approval of health
* Participates in supportive team meetings, conferences, and community advisory boards as assigned;
* Provides clinical supervision and training of health assistants and other paraprofessionals in the administration of individual student health planning, medications, blood glucose monitoring, providing first aid;
* Provides for the direct care and assessment of children in the classrooms, including lice screening;
* Provides health counseling;
* Provides training to staff, parents and health assistants throughout the year regarding school-specific and general health needs;
* Reports on physiological and mental health status of students;
* Responds to emergencies;
* Reviews and assesses health histories, medical information, including State-mandated immunizations;
* Reviews and establishes Individual Health Plans and emergency plans, as indicated;
* Reviews and facilitates health evaluations of children and families;
* Reviews objective data, such as temperature, color, and lung sounds, to determine the state of health;
* Reviews the past and current health history of each child to determine eligibility for specialized programs and for ongoing health and dental needs;
* Supervises and provides for the administration of medications, as needed;
* Teaches various health-related issues, such as bloodborne pathogens, puberty issues, and hygiene, to students and staff;
* Works with the staff and community medical resources regarding linking health and medical needs;
* Performs related duties as assigned.
