JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the health room at the assigned school. The Certified School Nurse (CSN) is responsible for promoting wellness and preventative health maintenance while providing health care and assistance to students and staff.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Current PA Registered Nurse license
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
- Certified as an Educational Specialist by PA Department of Education
- or in lieu of Certified as an Educational Specialist II, certified as an Educational Specialist I working towards completion of obtaining Level II status
- Ongoing completion of Act 48 continuing education hours in compliance with PDE requirements
- Minimum of five (5) years' experience in a school health setting
- Certification in First Aid, CPR and AED
- Must possess excellent interpersonal skills along with ability to work well with children daily
- Must be able to multi-task with frequent interruptions
- Ability to effectively communicate in multiple mediums
- Ability to exercise good judgement and complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision
- Ability to operate office, A/V and computer equipment
- Pre-employment physical examination
- PA State Police Criminal History Report
- FBI Criminal History Record
- Child Abuse History Clearance
- Ten (10) years' experience in a school health setting
- Prior acute care experience
PRIMARY DUTIES:
- Provide nursing services including assessment of and initial care/referral for minor illnesses, chronic or disabling conditions, emergency care and first aid adhering to school policy and standing orders
- Performs and/or oversees mandated screenings and completes referrals and follow-up where applicable.
- Maintains comprehensive health records on each student and records of school nursing services.
- Reviews and monitors student immunization status. Communicate with parent/guardian regarding provisional status. Makes appropriate referrals to up-date immunizations when indicated. Communicate with administrator needs for exclusion from school based on non-compliance.
- Maintain communication with parents/guardians regarding health concerns, which may affect student's learning process, results of screenings, mandatory health examinations, or any acute
- illness or injury to student.
- Maintain communication with faculty/staff regarding student health conditions and give instruction; plan educational programs for faculty/staff.
- Assists in interpreting the health needs of individual children to parents and teachers and assists families in utilizing community resources for improving the health of their children.
- Provide health teaching and counseling.
- Establish health care plans for students with special health care needs and update them as needed.
- Complete state health report at the end of the year. Ensures that reports required by the PA Department of Health are properly prepared and forwarded. (This includes SHAARS [submitted by business manager] and Immunization reports)
- Carries out policies and procedures for the control of communicable diseases and, in collaboration with the PA Department of Health.
- Provide instructional programs for students such as developmental growth and dental health.
- Administers medications and performs procedures according to physician orders and school district policies and/or procedures. Ensures physician orders for individual student medications and/or treatments comply with requirements for administration.
- Schedule and assist with school physical examinations and school dental examinations.
- Complete monthly maintenance checks on AED.
- Participate as a member of the Student Assistance Team and Safety Team.
- Plans with school administrative, maintenance, and sanitation personnel for the environmental needs of the school group and advises school officials of the environmental adjustment necessary to meet the needs of physically challenged individuals.
- Serve as resource person to facilitate learning of positive health and wellness behaviors for students and staff.
- Caseload includes assigned district buildings and assigned private schools within district. Services to private schools include screenings, required reports, maintenance of records, care planning and consultation as needed.
SECONDARY DUTIES:
- Perform other duties as assigned
Frequent interaction with school age children and youth. Infrequent communication with student population parents or caretakers. Will work with building personnel and indirectly report to building principal for day-to-day tasks and performance.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
The working conditions for this position are in a health room setting with inside environmental conditions. This position will require most of the daily movement walking through the health room, triaging several patients across multiple health room(s) settings.
