DEFINITION:

Under the general direction of the Principal and/or Administrator II Pupil Personnel Services, the Health Services Technician provides health services to students under established District guidelines and those provided by a student's physician and/or the District Nurse; prepares and maintains student health records, logs and documentation.

Administrator II Pupil Personnel Services or Designee

* Assists a District Nurse in coordinating health services for students.
* Establishes and maintains student health records, logs and lists related to health, immunization, assessments, medications, illnesses, screenings, emergencies, health care referrals, accidents, medical issues and assigned duties.
* Assists a District Nurse with mandated reports.
* Collects student health data; performs a variety of record-keeping and clerical duties in support of student health services; files, duplicates and distributes materials; distributes, collects and processes various health-related forms; prepares and disseminates routine correspondence and informational materials.
* Administers oral and/or topical medications according to physician 's orders; maintains records of dosage including amount, time, medication, authorizations and related information.
* Screens student health related complaints; takes and records health information (i.e. temperatures) according to District procedures; reports student medical conditions to a District Nurse, LVN, and parents/guardians as required.
* Administers basic first aid to students as appropriate; performs CPR in emergency situations.
* Consults with a District Nurse regarding questions and concerns about student health care and conditions.
* *Administers Specialized Physical Health Care Procedures as assigned and as defined in

California Education Code.

* Assists in scheduling, coordinating and monitoring the implementation of health care plans, including but not limited to seizure action plan, diabetes action plan, anaphylactic action plan, asthma action plan; reviews and understands individual student's health care plans.
* May volunteer to administer emergency medications as defined in the CSEA contract.
* Provides support for a District Nurse and LVN by monitoring and reviewing blood sugar testing, carbohydrate counts and daily glucose results for diabetic students per physician's orders; updates blood sugar logs.
* Assists in compiling data for the District 's LEA Medical Billing Program and Medical

Administrative Activities (MAA), when required.

* Initiates and receives telephone calls and emails; contacts parents regarding ill or injured students; maintains confidentiality of student health information.
* Assists District Nurse in the coordination of vision, hearing, and various other screening tests and clinics for students as appropriate; obtains and prioritizes vision and hearing requests for students from District personnel.
* Informs parents/guardians of required immunizations; makes appropriate referral(s) for necessary immunizations if necessary; informs District Nurse and/or LVN of any deficiencies.
* Assists with the prevention and control of communicable diseases in the school and

community by informing District Nurse and/or LVN of potential cases.

* Communicates with Principals and teachers regarding student needs and health issues.
* Checks for head lice for individual students who are referred to the health office and contacts parents as necessary.
* Provides assistance to students with toileting/diapering needs in the absence of an assigned support person.
* Maintains the health office in a clean, orderly, and safe condition (not to include regular

custodial cleaning duties).

* Requests, receives, and maintains inventory of first aid and health office supplies as necessary.
* Communicates with personnel, parents and others to exchange information and resolve issues

or concerns.

* Attends and participates in meetings, workshops and in-service trainings.
* Performs other job related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience:

* High school diploma or equivalent
* Any combination of experience which has provided the applicant with the required knowledge and abilities to successfully perform job duties.

Knowledge of:

* Standard office practices, including filing systems, receptionist, telephone techniques, and arithmetic
* Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
* Data base and word processing software programs to maintain records and reports.
* First aid and CPR methods and procedures.

Ability to:

* Learn and implement health and safety regulations (i.e. safe medication administration).
* Learn and adhere to District policies and state regulations concerning immunization of school-aged children.
* Perform a variety of activities in support of student health services.
* Administer first aid, CPR and emergency medical care as necessary.
* Learn and perform specialized physical health care procedures as directed.
* Handle information in a discreet and confidential manner in accordance with District rules, regulations, and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
* Utilize standard health instruments (i.e. thermometer) and first aid supplies.
* Learn and implement child guidance principles and practices related to children with special education needs.
* Plan, formulate and execute clerical procedures and directives in accordance with assigned

duties and office policies

* Maintain files, compile and verify data, and prepare reports accurately.
* Use an alpha/numeric keyboard, at no less than 30 words per minute, with accuracy to successfully complete assignments.
* Communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
* Complete tasks in an environment with constant interruptions.
* Work under general supervision and function effectively within a team setting.
* Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
* Be flexible with a positive attitude and possess excellent interpersonal skills.
* Exercise reasonable judgement in unusual circumstances.
* Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.

Licenses and Certificates:

* Valid First Aid and CPR Certificates appropriate for the assigned age group and issued by an authorized agency prior to first date of employment; maintain valid certifications.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

* Previous experience working in a public education environment.
* Bilingual English and Spanish.

* Physical tolerance to be exposed to dust, pollen, specific agents/chemicals, cleaners, foul

smells

AVAILABLE STIPENDS:

* *There is an additional 5% pay differential for Specialized Health Care Procedures if assigned to specific students and trained by the District.

medications/procedures as defined by contract.
