Position Overview:

Provides breastfeeding assistance and childbirth education programs to all applicable patients. Facilitates lactation education, resources and support to patients and healthcare providers including nurses, mid-wives, physicians, educators, and social service personnel ensuring services provided are consistent with organizational policies, applicable research and current standards. Delivers individual and classroom lactation education as needed. Evaluates specific lactation problems by telephone and develops a management and follow-up plan of care when indicated.

JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:

EDUCATION

* Provides education on basic breastfeeding techniques, treatment of breastfeeding complication, the use of breast pumps, and other lactation related issues, utilizing appropriate infection control practices.
* Identifies, analyzes and formulates a plan of care based on approved protocols that result in the attainment of the breastfeeding mother's individual goals.
* Directly assists clients with the use of breast pumps, both in the department and in the hospital; assists with breast pump problems; helps other staff members with client questions; assists with bra fittings as needed.
* Conducts teaching of breastfeeding class or support groups.
* Supports the development and implementation of the standards of care and guidelines for assisting breastfeeding mothers.

COMMUNICATION

* Strong communication skills and teamwork with staff.
* Conducts significant degree of patient communication by phone and My HealthOnline (initial inquiry, follow-up, etc.).
* Ability to identify lactation problems by telephone and develops a management and follow-up plan based on approved protocols.
* Clearly explains medical terms and procedures to patients to enhance the care and ensure the patient fully understands the procedure.

EDUCATION PROGRAM DESIGN

* Conducts educational needs assessments through data analysis, review of hospital utilization trends, literature review of current research data and program presentation to physicians, mid-wives, affiliate staff and other referral sources.
* Collaborates with the team/supervisor, develops, interprets, and maintains standards of lactation consultant nursing practices based on Nursing Practice Act and International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant guidelines.
* Suggests strategies for program design and shares customer/instructor problems and praise, communication issues, updates, and suggestions for additions to the program.

DEVELOPMENT

* Responsible for own professional growth.
* Develops or obtains suitable educational materials to facilitate patient understanding of content by maintaining and enhancing level of knowledge in the field of lactation through courses, reading professional journals and staying abreast of the latest recommended practices and guidelines.
* Attends conferences and other venues to maintain current knowledge and certification and to improve patient quality of care.
* Attends monthly staff meetings.

EDUCATION:

Other: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE:

RN-Registered Nurse of California

CLC-Certified Lactation Consultant

OR IBLCE-Certified Lactation Consultant

BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider

TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:

2 years recent relevant experience

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

Maternal-infant assessment skills.

Organizational skills with ability to prioritize, problem solve and meet deadlines.

Interpersonal and customer service skills.

Ability to gather data to complete reports on a timely basis.

Written and verbal interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills.
