ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN with Security Clearance

Duties
• You will obtain, provide and give basic recommendations on manufacturing processes, materials, and how each part interrelates with the other components of the system.
• You will be responsible for the complete electromechanical equipment, including the development of switching and optical detector circuitry and motion control component selection.
• You will carry out the routine maintenance of the astronomical instruments located throughout the observatory grounds.
• You will work closely with the senior machinists and other Engineering Division personnel to provided mechanical design and fabrication input into the basic designs that the incumbent will further develop, document, produce, and test.
• You will be liaison with computer issues for the engineering division to include installation, maintenance and working with IT support at USNO as well as software vendor support.
• You will create CAD drawings and work from rough sketches and verbal instructions and must have enough familiarity with the work of the particular department involved as to be able to converse effectively with the scientists or engineers.
• You will operate manual shop equipment, in accordance with standard shop safety practices.
• You will program, setup, and operate CNC equipment.
• You will design one-of-a-kind fixtures or instrumentation using CAD systems.
• You will perform maintenance to machining equipment and pneumatics.
• You will maintain the maintenance of complex mechanical systems, which may require climbing to heights using ladders, cranes, and safety harnesses.
• You will communicating scientific and technical material in both verbal and written formats to a wide range of audiences from astronomy experts and peers to government or international experts
Requirements Conditions of Employment

Qualifications Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-9 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector
Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
• Experience operating manual shop equipment in accordance with standard shop safety practices.
• Experience with program, setup, and operating CNC equipment.
• Experience designing one-of-a-kind fixtures or instrumentation using CAD systems.
• Experience performing maintenance to machine equipment pneumatics.
• Experience performing maintenance on complex mechanical systems, which may require climbing to heights using ladders, cranes, and safety harnesses.
• Experience troubleshooting electrical systems.
• Experience communicating scientific and technical material in both verbal and written formats to a wide range of audiences from astronomy experts and peers to government or international experts.
• Experience performing credit card purchases and maintain purchasing documents.
• Experience in machine shop setup, operating of manual mill, lathes, grinder, saws, measuring equipment, CMM, calibers, mic's and indicators.
• Experience fabricating and modifying scientific instruments and or tooling, by setting up and operating manual CNC lathes and mills, this includes programming G code for the CNC equipment.
• Experience in basic design principles and application, to include designing with CADsoft ware, applying GD&T to the processes and understanding material properties to selectappropriate material for the application.
• Experience in basic mechanical and electrical techniques used to troubleshoot issues.
• Experience in basic welding and sheet metal; adhering to shop safety standards
