University of Chicago Vitamin D Research Community Outreach

There is evidence that vitamin D may prevent or improve outcomes in many chronic or acute conditions, including depression, diabetes, acute and chronic respiratory conditions, and, recently, COVID-19. Evidence from research led by the UChicago Medical Center (UCMC) Vitamin D research team, published in JAMA Network Open, supports the hypothesis that vitamin D deficiency may also affect COVID-19 risk, finding that patients with vitamin D deficiency that was not adequately treated were almost twice as likely to test positive for COVID-19 than patients who were not vitamin D deficient. These associations are especially important because nearly half of the US population is vitamin D deficient, with higher rates among persons with darker skin and/or lower sun exposure, including those living in higher latitudes in the winter, nursing home residents, and health care workers. To determine whether vitamin D supplementation can help prevent COVID-19 and other health conditions, the Vitamin D research team has launched a randomized controlled trial locally in Chicago and a second one nationally. Providing learning opportunities to individuals and communities about vitamin D and vitamin D research is an important extension of our work so that we can help people make informed decisions about their own health and about participating in research. AmeriCorps members will extend the work of the Vitamin D research team by conducting outreach to provide education about vitamin D and opportunities to participate in studies of vitamin for persons locally and nationally, and by helping them making informed decisions about taking vitamin D and participating in studies about vitamin D. Members may also have the opportunity to split time with the Comprehensive Care, Community & Culture Program at UCMC. Member Duties : AmeriCorps member responsibilities include: 1) Conduct direct community outreach, both locally and nationally, to provide learning opportunities about vitamin D and vitamin D research 2) Conduct outreach about vitamin D and vitamin D research to patients and visitors at the University of Chicago Medical Center 3) Identify and build relationships with community partners who are interested in helping share information with the community about vitamin D and vitamin D research 4) Members may also have the opportunity to be involved in and support the Comprehensive Care, Community, and Culture Program (C4P) at UCMC.
