Job Summary

Responsible for following up with patients who have been registered for care in the emergency department with a focus on understanding of discharge instructions, identifying indications patient should return for re-evaluation and the degree of urgency, informing patient of test results, determining intent to pursue follow-up appointments as indicated, liaison between patient and provider to ensure appropriate medication therapy and/or need for further outpatient testing. Timely documentation in patient records as indicated.

ED Call-Back nurse has a professional obligation to participate in committee activities, surveys and improvement initiatives.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum Education
    • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Minimum Work Experience
    • 3 years in an acute care setting
  • Required Licenses/Certifications
    • Registered Nurse
  • Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
    • Excellent human relation skills with ability to empathize, de-escalate, and actively listen
    • Provide appropriate direction with corresponding urgency based on ability to glean adequate information
    • Prioritize patient lists and collaborate with ED providers to ensure appropriate care loop closures
    • Professional demeanor and phone etiquette
    • Firm understanding of privacy regulations and how to establish acceptable recipient of information on a phone call
    • General understanding of computer technology, electronic documentation, and Microsoft Office documents
    • Autonomous with self-initiative, desire to serve patient needs and ability to work in a largely isolated environment
