Substitute Nurse

POSITION SUMMARY:

The professional substitute school nurse is a part-time position and is responsible for helping in the planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating of school health services.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

The School Nurse must be a current Virginia licensed registered nurse with current BLS Certification. Experience in pediatrics is preferred.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following are the responsibilities of the School Nurse in relation to:

SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP -
  • Act as the spiritual leader of school and community.
  • Show evidence of a consistent time of personal Bible study, prayer, and outreach.
  • Maintain a Christ-like attitude.
  • Verifies that each student meets the health entrance requirements mandated by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the LCA School Board.

GENERAL -
  • Notifies division principals, the ELC Director, and applicable parents/guardians of any student who is non-compliant regarding school entrance health requirements.
  • Provides immunization reports each year to the Virginia Department of Health as required by state law, 30 days after the first day of school year (done online), and as requested by state or local health officials at any other time.
  • Communicates with parents, physicians, and public health offices in order to ensure an accurate diagnosis and treatment of a student's presenting medical condition.
  • Assists the doctor when the doctor is doing LCA sports physicals and/or international students', health-entrance physicals for LCA students.
  • Documents all medications brought to the nurse's office and ensures the safe keeping and distribution of such medications.
  • Ensures applicable student medications, copies of medicine consent forms, first aid kits, and dispensing instructions are provided for teachers leading field trips.
  • Updates and maintains student health records, which includes documenting all visits to the nurse's office.
  • Provides vision screenings, and scoliosis education, adding this data to student health records, and making referrals as needed for further evaluation.
  • Alerts teachers/staff/administrators via email and/or in person of any special medical needs students may possess.
  • Makes and provides all employees with bloodborne pathogen glove packets as needed.

EVALUATION: The School Nurse will be evaluated by the Elementary Principal each year. This evaluation will be based on the functions and responsibilities outlined in this job description.
