CLASS TITLE: PARAPROFESSIONAL I - BILINGUAL

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of limited or non-English speaking students in a classroom environment by interpreting written materials and oral lectures; serve as an interpreter for teachers or non-English speaking parents as directed; perform a variety of clerical support duties.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of limited or non-English speaking students in a classroom environment by interpreting written materials and oral lectures; interpret for teachers or non-English speaking parents as assigned.

Monitor students in the classroom to assure understanding of material being presented; answer student questions; assist students in reviewing homework assignments and test results; correct, score and record tests, papers and homework assignments.

Read books to students and observe their reading abilities as assigned; assist students with letter and word pronunciation and recognition.

Participate in the administration and scoring of assessment tests according to established guidelines and requirements; assist in determining English proficiency of identified students; explain results to appropriate parties; maintain related records and files.

Perform a variety of clerical duties such as preparing instructional materials, duplicating and distributing materials, taking roll, and maintaining various records and files; organize materials to assist student learning; answer telephones and assist callers as assigned by the position.

Observe and control behavior of students in the classroom and during outdoor activities according to approved procedures; oversee groups of students in games and play activities; assure safe outdoor play; report progress regarding student performance and behavior.

Provide input and assist teachers with determining student advancement through established learning programs; confer with teachers concerning programs and materials to meet student needs; assist in the development of lesson plans as requested.

Operate a variety of classroom and office equipment including a computer, copier, paper cutter and laminator.

Assist students with building self-esteem by providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance.

OTHER DUTIES:

Attend and participate in parent conferences and a variety of meetings as assigned; serve as an interpreter at parent conferences and meetings as assigned; schedule meetings as directed.

Accompany students on field trips as directed.

Perform related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Correct oral and written usage of English and a designated second language.

Basic subjects taught in District schools, including arithmetic, grammar, spelling, language and reading.

Child guidance principles and practices.

Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.

Basic instructional methods and techniques.

Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct.

Operation of standard office and classroom equipment.

Oral and written communication skills.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

Record-keeping techniques.

ABILITY TO:

Read, write and interpret English and a designated second language.

Assist with instruction and related activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment.

Reinforce instruction to individual or small groups of students as directed by the teacher.

Perform a variety of clerical duties including typing, filing and duplicating materials.

Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing in English and a designated second language.

Monitor, observe and report student behavior and progress according to approved policies and procedures.

Learn, explain and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Organize instructional materials.

Operate standard office and classroom equipment including a computer.

Observe health and safety regulations.

Maintain records and files.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

NCLB compliance requires that paraprofessionals meet the following criteria:

1. A high school diploma or the equivalent; and

2. Two years of college (48 units); or

3. An A.A. degree (or higher), or

4. Pass a local assessment of knowledge or skills that demonstrates the equivalent of the above requirements.
