Job Description
Part-Time School Nurse
Title: School Nurse
Qualifications:
1. Skills and proper certification/licensure to perform assigned duties
2. Evidence of physical fitness to perform all assigned duties
3. Current First Aid and CPR certification
4. Strong communication skills and ability to maintain confidentiality
5. Ability to work well with students, parents, and staff
Reports to: Superintendent
Job Goal: To monitor the general health of students and staff and promote accepted health practices
Performance
Responsibilities:
- Deliver First Aid when needed in accordance with accepted procedures as permitted in the part-time .
- Perform standard health inquiries and diagnostics (i.e. taking temperature, checking for lice, etc.), enter the results into the log book, and report the results to the principal and parents/guardians as permitted in the part-time .
- Provide basic medical treatment for students and staff in accordance with generally accepted practices as permitted in the part-time schedule.
- Attend appropriate training related to areas such as diabetes and seizures.
- Respond appropriately to emergency health situations.
- Maintain a supply of Epi-Pens at the school and ensure appropriate staff members are trained in the use of Epi-Pens.
- Inspect AED's on a monthly basis and replace expired parts.
- Coordinate the administration of medications to students in accordance with Board policy and procedures.
- Keep accurate records and complete reports regarding immunization dates, health and dental examinations, and medical conditions in compliance with state mandates.
- Coordinate mandated screenings for vision and hearing and maintain equipment such as ensuring the audiometer is calibrated properly.
- Maintain communication with teachers, administrators, other school personnel, and parents/guardians to ensure student health needs are met.
- Develop a medical watch list.
- Assist at registration to collect health records and provide information to parents/guardians regarding state requirements.
- Complete accident/incident reports for students and staff as per Board policy.
- Make appropriate referrals, as a mandated reporter, for suspected child abuse/neglect.
- Maintain confidentiality under the Illinois Student Records Act, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, and the Personnel Records Review Act.
- Perform needed clerical duties as needed and maintain supplies for the health room.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers in the presentation of information related to child and adolescent health issues.
- Serve as a resource for students, parents, and staff in regard to health and wellness issues.
- Provide timely information to students, parents, and staff members in regard to communicable diseases.
- Serve as a liaison with the Lee County Health Department.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal or superintendent.
