Senior Biologist

DescriptionBurns & McDonnell's office in Denver, CO, is actively seeking a Senior Biologist to lead multi-disciplinary survey and monitoring teams in construction and restoration monitoring, vegetation mapping, sensitive species surveys, jurisdictional delineations and other field work for various types of projects, including high-voltage transmission line routing, power generation construction activities and water treatment facilities. Burns & McDonnell is a 100% employee-owned firm ranked numerous times on FORTUNE’s List of 100 Best Companies to Work For and voted as a Best Place to Work in cities across the United States.Manage field studies, including habitat assessments, aquatic studies and wildlife surveys.Develop ecological risk assessments and collect project-related data for analysis in environmental and ecological impact projects.Manage preparation of technical reports such as species surveys, mitigation and monitoring plans, biological assessments, biological evaluations, and critical impact statements.Lead habitat evaluations and presence/absence surveys to evaluate potential project impacts to sensitive habitats and special status species.Oversee environmental and ecological compliance audits.Monitor mitigation sites including wildlife and vegetation studies.Prepare GIS data for vegetation and wetland map production in accordance with standards and industry best practices.Oversee a wide variety of permitting applications such as municipality land use and federal special use and right of way grant permitting. Develop project permitting strategies to comply with state and federal laws and regulations such as the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Endangered Species Act, and the Clean Water Act.Present project status and technical reports to the project team. Build effective relationships with existing clients, customers and contractors and develop new business opportunities. Responsible for ensuring customer satisfaction goals and expectations are met. Manage proposal planning and development efforts.Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to the environmental practice. Mentor and guide less experienced staff. Provide performance feedback.Participate in recruitment efforts.Responsible for QA/QC process adherence.Responsible for effective communication with other disciplines. Ensure compliance with company and site safety policies. All other duties as assigned.QualificationsBachelor's degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, or related field from an accredited program required. Completion of a master's degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of experience.Minimum 8 years' experience performing environmental and site studies, preparing permitting applications and analyzing environmental data for various environmental impact projects.   Expert knowledge of the regulatory agencies that govern biological and ecological resources.Expert knowledge of wetland, stream, ecological risks and protected species assessments.Advanced knowledge of methods used for collection and analysis of environmental data.Expert knowledge of field investigation techniques and survey methods.Advanced technical skills, statistical knowledge and attention to detail.Federal permit (USFWS T&E Recovery Permit) for North American endangered bats or experience with presence/absence surveys for endangered bats is preferred.Ability to use creativity, problem-solving and analytical skills to develop solutions for complex project challenges.Proficient in the use of computer software (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).Excellent verbal and written communication skills.Ability to understand and assist with the management of large-scale permitting and construction projects, and the necessary communications processes associated with such an effort.Demonstrated ability to manage in a dynamic team environment.Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.Related consulting experience preferred.High level of attention to detail with experience performing quality reviews.Valid driver's license required.  In addition, must meet standards to qualify for and maintain the Company's vehicle driving privileges as outlined in the Company's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy.Compensation Range$115,000 – $170,000The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in accordance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.  The final agreed upon compensation is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location.  The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.BenefitsOur extensive benefits package takes care of you so that you can focus on doing great work.  From insurance and disability to time off and wellness programs, we provide the tools to meet your needs.  As part of being 100% employee-owned, eligible employees participate in our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) in addition to our 401(k) retirement program.  For more information, please visit the Benefits & Wellness page.EEO/Minorities/Females/Disabled/VeteransJob Field: EnvironmentalJob Type: ExperiencedSchedule: Full-timeTravel: Yes, 50 % of the Time
