ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides guidance and direction to professional employees and ancillary staff under the direction of the Director of Family Advocacy Center (FAC), ensuring that the organization's strategic plan, mission, vision, and values are communicated to the team and integrated into the team's strategies, goals objectives, work plans and work products and services.
  • Identifies, distributes, balances workload and tasks among employees in accordance with established caseload, skill level, scope of practice, and occupational specialization and making adjustments as necessary.
  • Performs triage of emergency phone calls and if appropriate, the nurse will return to FDIHB to provide emergency medical evaluations and forensic evidence collection in rotation with other nurses and providers on weekends, nights and holidays.
  • Makes appointments for patients and follows the medical protocol for the scheduling of emergency and scheduled medical evaluations for child sexual abuse and sexual assault.
  • Obtains the appropriate information during the intake process and complies with reporting requirements for sexual abuse and sexual assault to law enforcement and social service agencies.
  • Consults with investigative, legal, and treatment agencies and individuals in relation to confidential medical information and records with consideration to the rights of legal guardians and individual patients.
  • Obtains history from patients and family members during screening and consults as needed with team members to determine level of care and services indicated.
  • Obtains, prepares and provides relevant clinical information to outside physicians, referral agencies, tribal social services, law enforcement and community social service agencies for their use in reaching decisions and putting into place interventions.
  • Obtains and records weight, temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration data, oxygen saturation, etc. as appropriate to the provision of care. Performs peri-care, cleans wounds and applies sterile dressings, and performs phlebotomy as needed.
  • Performs specialized nursing procedures related to the needs of sexual abused/assaulted children, adolescents, and adults.
  • Prepares the exam room and necessary equipment.
    Assists the physician during examinations and treatments.
    Prepares patients and caretakers/families for tests, exams and treatment, obtains consent for the evaluation, photo documentation and laboratory tests.
    Assumes responsibility for maintenance of exam room preparation and supplies, forensic evidence collection equipment and supplies, aseptic technique and adequacy of supplies.
  • Assesses and treats minor health problems, provides medication, hypodermic injections and vaccinations, and obtains laboratory tests as prescribed and according to standing orders.
  • Maintains written and electronic logs of clinical activities and functions such as chain of custody for evidence collected, triage and follow-up visit logs, clinic schedule and calendar, and other related duties of the FAC clinical service.
  • Generates health records by documenting nursing interventions and evaluations, Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) evaluations, forensic and therapeutic measures taken.
  • Guards and maintains the confidentiality of patient medical records, observes the protocol for giving out information by phone or in person.
  • Follows up on patient referrals and coordinates the provision of services at the Family Advocacy Center with community agencies and professionals such as social services, law enforcement, and behavioral health personnel to assure timely and effective care for patients and their families. Coordinates health care needs through
    making referrals to other specialty clinics and community resources.
  • Provides advice and guidance to patients and their caretakers suffering from the behavioral, psychological, developmental, intellectual, and emotional aftereffects of sexual abuse/assault.
  • Conducts and offers suggestions on performance improvement projects for themselves and the FAC.
  • Prepares and participates in reports, audits and other evaluation tools as required to assess the effectiveness of their work and the FAC as necessary to meet the requirements of funding agencies.
  • Participates actively in program planning to raise the quality of care and safety of a vulnerable patient population by the development and maintenance of public understanding and sound working relationships with local agencies and community resources.
  • Maintains professional knowledge and proficiency in nursing and expertise in SANE duties, quality assurance and performance improvement through continuing education, outside conferences, trainings and workshops.
  • Assumes responsibility of mandatory training requirements.
    Attends FAC staff meetings as well as multi-disciplinary and community meetings as appropriate to the duties of the Registered Nurse or to serve as the representative of the FAC.
    Completes all yearly Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) required training by the indicated due dates.
  • Assists, promotes, and supports compliance with established CMS standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MANDATORY MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:
Two (2) years of Registered Nurse experience.
Education:
Associate of Science degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program.
License:
Valid and unrestricted Registered Nurse license in any U.S. State or Territory.
Certificate:
Valid American Heart Association (AHA) certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and maintain certification. Valid American Heart Association (AHA) certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and maintain certification. Must have or be willing to obtain a valid certification in Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) with Pediatric/Adult/Adolescent within six (6) months from date of hire and maintain certification.
