SUMMARY:
Provides and/or supervises the delivery of quality patient care within the framework of the Emergency Department. Explains procedures and treatments to patient. Administers prescribed medications and treatments. Prepares equipment and aids Physician. Responds to life saving situations. The Emergency Department Nurse uses initiative, independent judgment, critical thinking and professional skills to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the nursing care rendered.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
* The Registered Nurse is a professional who assumes responsibility for providing and/or supervising the delivery of quality patient care within the framework of the Emergency Department.
* The Registered Nurse uses initiative, independent judgment, and professional skills in utilizing the Nursing Process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the nursing care rendered.
* The RN is responsible for their own actions and competencies.
* The RN must apply the Nursing Process and incorporate instruction, teaching, and discharge planning into the care of each patient.
* The Registered Nurse fulfills the mission statement of the hospital and is the role model demonstrating compassion, competence, collaboration, and creativity.
* Explains procedures and treatments to patient to gain cooperation, understanding, and allay apprehension.
* Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with approved nursing techniques.
* Prepares equipment and aids Physician during treatment and examination of patient.
* Maintain awareness of comfort and safety needs of patient.
* Observes patient, records significant conditions and reactions, and notifies the supervisor or Physician of patient's condition and reaction to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents.
* Takes temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and other vital signs to detect deviations from normal and assess condition of patient.
* Responds to life saving situations based upon nursing standards, policies, procedures, and protocol.
* Documents nursing history and physical assessment for assigned patients.
* Maintains accountability for quality care as perceived by patients, families, medical staff, peers and colleagues.
* Follows rules and regulations on patient transfers. (COBRA/EMTALA).
* Assures that the patient transferred is stabilized, appropriate consultation and dissemination of information has occurred.
* Demonstrates knowledge and principles of PI and application of systematic improvement process.
* Provides care in the Pain Management environment directed toward meeting both psychosocial and physical needs of the patient. Functions as a resource person and teacher. Proficient in pain management guidelines and medication dosing.
* Enthusiastically assumes greater job responsibility by creating opportunities and assists as necessary without prompting.
* Demonstrates professionalism regarding dress and personal hygiene.
* Demonstrates a high degree of concern about people, takes time to care and show understanding and exemplifies expected behaviors, promotes team concepts and actively contributes toward conflict resolution.

* Responsible for wearing or using the Personal Protective Equipment as required.
* Performs within the prescribed limits of the hospital's Ethics and Compliance program. Detect, observe and report compliance variants to supervisor, compliance officer or hospital hot line.
* Maintain confidentiality according to the hospital information security policies and confidentiality statement.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITES
The Registered Nurse carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable law. Responsibilities may include orientation of new employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems. Oversight for Emergency Department Technicians
WORK CONDITIONS:
Work is performed in a fast-paced hospital environment. Work areas are well lit and climate controlled. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Procedures or other job-related tasks may involve an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids, or tissues, or a potential for spills or splashes of them. Use of appropriate protective measures is required for every employee engaged in these tasks.
Work area is shared. Work schedule may vary (including weekends, holidays and overtime). Working conditions require circulation of nursing personnel throughout the facility as needed for varying census.
PHSICAL ACTIVITY:
Extensive standing, walking, stopping, reaching; some sitting, pushing, pulling, lifting of medium to heavy weights required. Possible exposure to hazardous materials. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Qualifications
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and have a current Illinois license.
CERTIFICATION / LICENSURE::
Maintain certification of PALS and ACLS or obtain within the first six weeks of employment
Current CPR certification is required.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
* Computer skills
* Basic medical and office equipment skills.
* Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals.
* Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
* Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
* Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and vide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ration, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graph.
* Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
* Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
* Applicant will be required to complete orientation and annual competency standards as outlined by hospital policies and procedures.
* Must have sound knowledge of general nursing theory and practice, familiarity with organization, functions, polices, regulations, and procedures of the nursing service department and the hospital.
* Must be able to supervise and direct personnel.
* Good oral and written communication skills are necessary.
* Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the served in the nursing department.
