Position Summary

In collaboration with the medical and leadership team, the Patient Safety Nurse promotes a culture of patient safety and adherence to national clinical standards. The Patient Safety Nurse serves as a visible and recognized advocate within the interdisciplinary team of providers, clinical pharmacists, care management, advanced practice providers and clinical nurse specialists; all while working together to plan and implement the most safe, effective and evidenced based patient care.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:

  1. Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
  2. Responsible for designing, implementing and evaluating client care by coordinating, delegating and supervising the care provided by a healthcare team at the clinical level
  3. Serves as a patient safety advocate and clinical role model in their specific specialty
  4. Presents patient and staff concerns to appropriate clinical forums
  5. Participates in and contributes to clinical review activities.
  6. Assists and supports the healthcare team with disclosure when adverse event or untoward outcome occurs and coordinates debriefing sessions
  7. Identify and monitor specific metrics leading to improving patient care.
  8. Provides data as requested by internal and external bodies
  9. Performs collaborative reviews of adverse occurrences and near misses. Incorporates such into educational efforts.
  10. Maintains a database of records reviewed, issues identified and plans of correction.
  11. Assesses the documentation of charts reviewed and provides timely feedback to clinicians
  12. Flexible in work hours to provide a consistent communication and evaluation throughout all shifts to support a 24/7 care model.Fosters and promotes participation by all members of the team (Physicians, Nurses, Support staff) in education programs and drills
  13. Facilitates clinical drills for high risk situations
  14. Participates in ongoing education of nurses in their clinical specialty department
  15. Functions as a staff nurse and takes patient assignments as defined by each service line
  16. Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Education & Experience Requirements

NYS licensed RN.

Masters degree, preferred

National Certification in Speciality area upon application or within one year of hire At least 5 years nursing experience

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Experience with adult learning.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Previous research, patient safety, simulation or team training experience.

  • May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital's SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital's Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
