SUPERVISORY NURSE (CLINICAL/CRITICAL CARE HN), Tacoma, WA

Responsibilities

POSITION DUTIES:

Serves as Head Nurse of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in a regional medical center. Accountable for the 24 hour operation of the unit. As a clinical expert provides, directs, and evaluates the delivery and outcome of nursing care. Monitors and assesses the fiscal budget and resource utilization making adjustments as indicated. Collaborates with physicians and other health professionals to ensure a multidisciplinary approach to cost effective, quality patient care in a managed care environment. Responsible for the professional development, training and evaluation of professional and paraprofessional staff members. Develops, implements, and monitors unit standards, protocols, and quality improvement activities with a positive customer service focus.

MAJOR DUTIES:

1. Provides an advanced level of specialized nursing care to patients based on physicians medical plan of care and an assessment of the physical, psychological and sociological needs of the patient and family. Administers oxygen, IV fluids, blood products, prescribed medication. Sets up, operates, and monitors specialized neonatal equipment. Recognizes life threatening conditions that require immediate attention, implementing appropriate emergency measures. Coordinates patient and family needs with the case management team. Develops and/or supervises development of nursing care plans setting standards for care; identifies nursing issues specific to care of neonates in the NICU and ICN. Continuously evaluates all clinical and administrative procedures occurring in the NICU and ICU to insure quality patient care, recommending changes or implementation to nursing service policies and procedures when applicable. Ensures all levels of staff are practicing within their scope and receive supervision as appropriate. Collaborates with interdisciplinary group to formulate plans of care that are individualized and in accordance with accepted standards.

2. Plans work, makes shift and individual work assignments, supervises and evaluates subordinate personnel. Manages attendance and leave. Responsible for unit staffing. Adjusts workload and shift assignments based on patient acuity and skill level of nurses. Implements and recommends revisions as needed to policies, procedures, and related nursing service directives. Provides advice and assistance to subordinate personnel; evaluates staff proficiency, and regularly evaluates employee performance through counseling and feedback; prepares employee evaluations utilizing CPO and military guidelines; completes nursing reports as required. Reviews job descriptions and TAPES/OER support forms with employees. Reviews and answers informal complaints and advises or counsels employees as appropriate. Keeps subordinates advised on personnel management matters and changes affecting individuals.

3. Conducts formal and informal training introducing new equipment and/or procedures; reviews and expands clinical nursing knowledge, covering aspects of individual patient care in the orientation and development of subordinates. Ensures staff flexibility through intense cross-training within the Maternal Child section. Ensures neonatal specific training for all staff. Provides patient education in the art of self-care and preventative medicine. Schedules staff for mandatory training as appropriate.

4. Participates in program, policy and procedure development of the Department of Nursing, serves as a member of the Head Nurse Committee and In- Patient Services Quality Management Group, Quality Action Teams various other committees as delegated and interested. Responsible for completion of all reports, records maintenance and related requirements necessary to reflect treatment and care of patients assigned to the NICU and ICN; reports activities and operations under regulatory and locally established procedures, to include CQI and utilization management activities. Responsible for collaborative program/activities addressing targeting population, goals, clinical outcomes, and cost-effective neonatal care. Demonstrates basic automation skills; independent with use of CIS and CHCS.

At least one year of licensed clinical experience AFTER licensure as a registered nurse at the time of application
