Reports to: Physical Medicine Manager

POSITION SUMMARY: Plans and implements specific treatment programs for individual patients according to the principles and practices of occupational therapy. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to best meet patient needs.

ANTICIPATED SCHEDULE: 40 hours weekly, 8am to 4:30pm

Education:

* Required: Bachelors, Masters or Doctorate Degree in Occupational Therapy

License/Registration/Certification:

* Required: Active State of Iowa Occupational Therapist License

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

* Maintains established department procedures, objective, quality assurance programs, environmental and infection control standards and hospital policies including compliance policies.
* Ensures accurate and timely completion of patient's therapy documentation and treats patient records as protected health information. Adheres to policies and procedures regarding HIPAA guidelines.
* Performs initial and ongoing occupational therapy evaluations according to AOTA standards of practice as well as State of Iowa standards.
* Develops a plan of treatment for each patient based on initial and ongoing evaluations including patient goals, collaboration demands of other staff members and required patient and caregiver involvement.
* Implements the plan of treatment on a consistent schedule and adjusts this schedule and plan according to patient progress.
* Documents patient progress according to approved medical documentation and facility documentation procedures.
* Evaluates sensorimotor, cognitive, self-care, neuromuscular, physical and current level of patient function in their everyday activities, while setting goals to improve in these areas that are scaled to patient abilities and realistically attainable.
* Reports patient progress to patient, patient caregivers and loved ones, facility staff and healthcare professions involved in ongoing treatment and care of patients.
* Develops a plan for patients following completion of their Plan of Treatment with appropriate in-home care services.
* Assesses and implements activity needs for skilled inpatients.
* Maintain professional and technical knowledge through attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications, etc.
* Assists other facility staff members as needed to provide care and create a clean, orderly and effective environment for rehabilitation and occupational therapy.
* Designs and fits adaptive devices for individual patient needs. Fits and trains patient durable medical equipment and fabricates custom splints for patients as appropriate.
* Orders and maintains adaptive equipment and routine occupational therapy supplies. Assists patients with procuring needed adaptive equipment.
* Applies modalities appropriately, following all indications and contraindications.
* Supervises, coordinates and delegates the activities of occupational therapy assistants per regulatory requirements.
* Adapts occupational therapy interventions to meet the needs of patients from a variety of abilities, backgrounds and ages.
* Conducts or participates in training medical and allied health staff in ergonomics, occupational therapy techniques and procedures.
* Assists with the scheduling of patients.
* Collaborates with other medical professionals, patients and family members to provide the highest level of patient care.
