The nurse navigator coordinates the care for the patient prior to the patient's first consult visit at OHSU, and in some cases, through the work up and diagnosis phase of care. An Oncology Nurse Navigator (ONN) at OHSU is a professional RN with oncology-specific clinical knowledge who offers individual assistance to patients, families, and caregivers to help overcome healthcare system barriers. Using the nursing process, an ONN provides education and resources to facilitate informed decision-making and timely access to quality health and psychosocial care as they approach their first visit. This individual will serve as the primary point of contact for all navigated patients within the disease specialties they cover and will thoroughly hand off care (verbally and in EMR documentation) to providers and nurses assuming care of the patient after the first consult.

The ONN interfaces with research staff, and works to identify patients who may be suitable candidates for clinical trials.
