Attendance

Non-rotating 40-hour work week, Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm; must be available to work additional hours as needed.

Overview

The Breastfeeding counselor plays a crucial role in promoting the health and well-being of infants and mothers. By offering expert guidance and support, they help to establish breastfeeding as a natural and optimal practice. Their efforts contribute significantly to increasing breastfeeding rates, which is associated with numerous health benefits for both infants and mothers, including strengthened immune systems and enhanced mother-child bonding. These professionals are vital in ensuring that new mothers receive the encouragement and information they need to make informed decisions about feeding their infants.

Responsibilities

• Provide information on breastfeeding by serving as a peer counselor, distributing breastfeeding information, issuing breast pumps, providing information materials, and completing records and forms for department use.

• Assess, assist, and resolve issues with breastfeeding.

• Give resources and reference material to support successful breast feeding the infant.

• Provide employee training on issuance, transfers, destruction, documentation, and troubleshooting for breastfeeding equipment and breastfeeding aids.

• Teach mothers how to assemble and properly care for the breastfeeding aids and pumps, as well as completing client documentation for breastfeeding pumps and aids.

• Being able to provide breastfeeding service for our WIC clientele with a series of breastfeeding materials to enhance the level of breastfeeding satisfaction.

• Provide professional internal and external customer service in the clinic setting, outreach or other state, city or community set environments.

• Check inventory for breast feeding pumps and aid weekly.

• Follow up calls to nursing mothers who have a loaned breast pump from the WIC program.

• Report and record all broken, damaged, and non- retrievable pumps to the state agency or manufacturer.

• Coding, recording, or changing food package codes to meet the needs of the nursing mother according to our WIC state guidelines.

• Providing WIC approved materials to promote breastfeeding benefits for the mothers and babies in our community.

• Giving support and referrals to the families in our community.

• Train and maintain personal training as JCS Command and other first responder training.

• May be asked to perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

• Requires High School Diploma/GED

• No prior experience required

• Must have successfully breastfed or expressed breastmilk

• Current or past WIC breastfeeding participant preferred

• A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire
